Ah, but then you have to decide what the hire scheme is actually for. Is it a commuting option or a leisure facility?Providing a subsidy that sees every hire result in a £1 loss, as this scheme does, isn’t sustainable for any organisation. The more you expand it, the bigger the loss, the bigger the subsidy required. That’s money that won’t be spent on transport projects elsewhere that might benefit more people.The simple solution would be to increase the hire costs for the user to ensure there was a small profit made on each hire. Of course that might deter some from using the scheme, but since most cyclists in London (according to TfL) are high income, middle class types they should be able to afford it.
