Free talks in Feb - open to everyone !

Age concern Chiswick is proud to present informative talks and lectures this Feb.  1.  Thursday 9th February at 11.30 am:  a talk by a senior Elections Officer from LB Hounslow about the new photo Identity (ID) requirements for voting in local and national elections.  This is very important as you will not be able to vote without the right ID.       2.     Thursday 16th February at 12 noon :  a short talk by a representative of Scottish and Southern Electricity about Priority Services Registers.  All energy suppliers and network operators are legally required to keep a register of vulnerable customers.  He will explain who is eligible and how to get your name recorded. The information for ID voting came from a Hounslow election officer.You cannot uses photo copy of any ID with a photograph The ID for other things we have do to prove our identity are different from the new ID votingThere will be more mail outs from Hounslow before we have to use them

That's interesting because in the finding of a new local bank and just bank dealings with FIL some years ago the criteria the bank and others insisted on as acceptable bits of ID 'proof' included a gun licence and a driving licence which as someone registered blind were very unlikely to be available.  In fact it was the bank who advised us to get a passport for him when he had not been abroad for over 25 years.  They wouldn't accept out of date or short dated of anything and with bills wanted them to  be new (just about everthing was paid by DD) so these had to be requested. We needed an accessible building too with a  downstairs interview room.  You couldn't expect two authorities or agencies to agree on anything.  So I very much hope this has been safely simplified or many people will be disenfranchised.(I read recently that you can't travel to some countries without a certain number of blank pages in your passport.)

You can use an out of date passport or driving licence, as long as the photos still looks like you. Plus an up to date passport and Driving Licence You  can also use your freedom pass, and other transport passes that have you photograph onPostal votes are checked against you signature you provided 5 years years agoIf you your signature is coming up to 5 years old you will receive a letter asking you to re submit you latest signature.They are also checked against the voting register and council tax register..So postal votes are opened as soon as the returning officer receives them in the post as they go through a lot of checks that couldn’t be carried out on polling day

Missed bumping this talk on 9 February. It is important that everyone gets to be able to use their Right to Vote.I expect we all know someone who does not have photo ID.  If you haven't replaced your Driving Licence recently and haven't been abroad and so don't have a valid passport - you will probably be one of them.  I remember having to get my FIL a passport although there was no way that he would be using it just to be able to have ID for a new bank account and a Blue Badge.  He was not on electronic registers and didn't use credit.16 February:  on Priority Services Registers.Maybe you don't think this refers to you today but you never know when you or someone you know will need the help - so find out now.
