*** credit card scam ***
Beware new credit card scam. They tried this one on me yesterday. Got a phone call just after 5 pm supposedly from JL Mastercard. The guy knew my name & asked me if I had a John Lewis card ending in… I said yes, he asked if I had tried to make a purchase for £600 in Liverpool a few minutes beforehand. I said no, then asked if I had given my card or its details to anybody. I said no. He then said he would cancel this transaction and also cancel my card and issue me with a new one. In the meantime they he was going to text me a security code which I was to read back to him. I then asked him to hang up and call me back so that I could check the details. I never heard anything back and he didn’t send any code. I’m guessing the ‘security code’ would have been the OTP which he would have needed to make an online purchase. Interestingly he called just after 5pm when the customer service/fraud dept have just closed . Crazy as this is, there is no 24/7 hotline to report and fraud, and these scammers know that they have a 17 hour window before I would’ve been able to report anything ( customer services doesn’t open till 10am on Sunday)Please beware and share.
