Gushy and unconvincing Tabard reviews

My experience of the Tabard has been hit and miss over the years. My understanding is that the theatre doesn’t commission and curate, but rather takes in bids from theatre producers, who mainly rent the theatre. . So the results are up and down. For this reason, plays are almost never reviewed in the mainstream media unlike the Lyric Hammersmith or the Orange Tree. Susan Stanley Carroll is not a professional theatre critic, she is a retired English teacher in her early eighties. Her reviews read like more like advertorial than professional reviews   I would be interested to hear from people who have seen the plays which she extols as rising to new heights and “faultless”. I don’t recall a  singlemediocre review from her. https://www.dailymail.co.uk/femail/article-8610035/This-81-looks-like.htmlI think both the Tabard and the Chiswickw4 readers would be much better served by balanced reviews which provide a serious and engaged critique of the plays being produced and performed. Rather than uncritical lavish praise. I for one would place more confidence in them. There is plenty of  writing talent in Chiswick who could produce strong independent reviews.

Tabard Theatre deserves our support

I have seen great productions at the tiny Tabard Theatre down the years and we are lucky to have it.  The negative recent post is the last thing any theatre needs at any time, let alone in the current very difficult climate.I have always had very positive experiences at the Tabard and have been amazed by some of the clever productions they have put on in such a small space.  It is really well worth supporting.

Fingers Crossed for London Irish

I was very alarmed to read the article on this site about the plight of London Irish. I hadn't realised things had got to this state.I'm not a season ticket holder but have on several occasions since they came to Brentford gone along to games and always really enjoyed it. Great atmosphere and they play attractive attacking rugby. If Newcastle are also struggling you do fear for the future of the club game as a whole in this country.I hope Brentford can be persuaded to be supportive. The damage to the pitch may be a challenge, and it could be that Irish are unwilling to pay the full cost. However, when the deal was signed originally, I was told that Brentford got much the better side of the deal for the bar takings on match day which are much higher than those for football matches even though attendances overall are lower. The danger for the Bees is that the rugby club will get a new backer who will want them to move to a new ground with a better deal on bar takings. The Plough Lane stadium in Wimbledon only needs to increase capacity by a few hundred to meet rugby Premiership standards and there already is a deal between London Broncos and AFC Wimbledon but Irish would be a much more attractive partner.

Car Hire Recommendation

Would appreciate some advice advice please. I need to rent a car this Sunday evening to return Monday evening.  I usually rent from Enterprise in Hammersmith but they are not open on Sunday so I can only get it from them on Saturday, adding an additional day I don't need. Alternative pick up points with Enterprise don't work for us so wondering if there are any other very local firms that you would recommended.  Many thanks

Joiner/carpenter needed

Any recommendations for a good local joiner/carpenter? I need repairs to a wooden door frame. Not sure whether it's the right kind of job for the carpentry firms that have been mentioned here previously for constructing bookcases/chairs etc. Thanks.

"Accidental Death Of An Anarchist" (Dario Fo play)

I went to see this during in April during its run at the Lyric Hammersmith and I have to say it was as good as anything I've ever seen in the theatre in 40 years.I had previously seen two other of Fo's plays, 'Can't Pay, Won't Pay' and 'Trumpets and Raspberries' - both truly excellent - but can see how Anarchist is his most celebrated work.I won't spoil it for anyone, but it's a totally hilarious, though thought-provoking political satire, which has been translated beautifully from its original setting concerning an actual event in 1980's Italy, to London in 2023.And now it's transferred to the Theatre Royal Haymarket from later this month:https://anarchistwestend.com/?gclid=EAIaIQobChMI1pPUrNuq_wIVWevtCh0ARgtUEAAYASAAEgJbpvD_BwEDo whatever you can to get a ticket - you won't be disappointed!

Elton John tickets available for this Sat - Birmingham

I have 2 top-priced tickets available for Sat evening in Birmingham.Seats are in Block E. Face value is £150 + £20.75 booking fee, so £170.75 per ticket. I would prefer to sell on here at that price rather than stick on Viagogo.I assume the DM function still doesn't work - mail me at simonjtranter@gmail.com if interested.

Next Door’s Baby at the Tabard

There’s already a great review of this play on the site but I would say it’s one of the best pieces of theatre I’ve seen in a long time. The acting is terrific. The story is both funny and sad and particularly if you’ve any connection with Ireland it’ll knock your socks off. Do give it a whirl, the fantastic cast deserve your support!
