In these troubling times it is so pleasant to once again be able to share time with another group of exceptionally diverse, talented and friendly people competing for the ‘22 Bake Off trophy. As seems to have become usual, the overall standard of baking is incredibly high. And for serious fans there is also the fun of An Extra Slice on Friday evenings with Jo Brand and Tom Allen in their elements.Janusz was deservedly the first star baker, an obvious one to watch. Syabira would be another. And surely, sooner or later, someone on the show is going to comment on the striking resemblance of Janusz to Matt Lucas’s former comedy partner, David Walliams.

Well it’s all been a bit predictable this year. Apart from Abdul the other three semi-finalists seemed obvious from the start and throughout. And I was expecting Maxi to get through too but she’d been stumbling a bit recently. As for who’s going to win I’d say it’s likely to be between Sandro and Janusz and with Syabira a little ahead of Abdul in the stakes, but it could be anybody’s.Meanwhile in the Professional Masterchef tent, Anna Haugh has glided effortlessly into Monica Galetti’s role and Anastasia looks to be a very promising contestant.
