Please say it ain't so!Actually, thinking about it rationally and taking into account the man's overweening ambition and vanity as well as his parlous financial situation it seems unlikely. Two things seem entirely predictable at the moment. Firstly that the Tories will lose the next election and secondly that the incompetence of Liz Triss will be blamed and she will be subject to a leadership challenge in 2024.Johnson has to be calculating that his Uxbridge seat is not defensible given the current polls and so it is a safe assumption that he has already started work on an alternative. My guess would be that he has already been looking at Henley where he will have connections in the local Conservative Association. The incumbent, John Howell, could be offered the inevitable peerage to stand down.As Johnson hasn't been able to earn much money to cover the crippling cost of his divorce, his own financial ineptitude and the expensive tastes of his wife, you are now likely to see an uncharacteristic burst of activity from him as he seeks to boost his earnings from speaking engagements. Right now, he doesn't really have the means to buy or rent a property in Chiswick, particularly if the area plays no part in his comeback plans. The problem is, as outlined in the excellent Rest is Politics podcast by Rory Stewart, that although most Tory MPs have always recognised Johnson is unfit for office, once a candidate like him gains momentum he will inevitably win. The MPs say they have mortgages and children to educate and therefore can't afford not to gain ministerial preferment by not supporting Johnson. Obviously the geriatric membership of the party will always support him when it comes to their turn to choose. The worry would be that the economic state of this country is so bad that even a well run government led by a person of integrity may struggle to convince the electorate that everything is being done that could be. Hard choices are going to be have to made in the future that people won't like. Then in 2028 along comes Johnson again with easy solutions and promises he has no intention of keeping, and the chances are, enough people will fall for them to give him another go at ruining the country even further. If he did move to Chiswick, you could argue we should celebrate as it might indicate the above isn't actually what he has planned.
