The fact the none of these schemes has included even the simplest physical modifications to the road layout since they were set up, such as a chicane, a planter, or words painted on the road, suggests that this is intentional and local authorities are more than happy to install the minimum required signage and pocket the proceeds from the predictably frequent infringements. This is a cynical response, as it relies on these schemes not actually working by fulfilling their promised traffic reducing, safety increasing, or modal shifting objectives, which encourages many road users and residents to regard them with the suspicion and mistrust they deserve.
