Injured squirrel

Help I’ve found a injured squirrel, I’ve put it in a box. Where to take it?

Not sure what you can do without it being put down being a non native species. But that was a EU law so maybe places will be moreinclined to possibly save it. You may need someone who does this as a hobby rather than a vet or RSPCA

After many phones call was told Grey Squirrels are not allowed to be treated or released back to wild.Stupid rule pretty sure there’s no red squirrels in London.Anyway a lady has taken it of my hands said she’s looked after a injured bird before.Believe the squirrel was more in shock than injured as it started to move around a bit more.

Have used this lady many times.....This is a London-based licensed squirrel rescuehttps://www.urbansquirrels.co.uk/

A friend in north London found an injured squirrel about a year ago and nursed it back to health. It's now his pet and lives in his flat and garden. It could leave if it wanted to but seems quite contentto stay.

Ben, that's so lovely🐿️🐿️

Carol Burge ● 1858d

It is and quite funny. This friend is 6'5' and the squirrel, which was very young when he found it ,has bonded with him, thinks he's his mother or fatherand will sit on his shoulder.

Squirrels are bliss, it's a pity they get such a bad press.  They really interact with their human given a chance.

Viv Griffiths ● 1858d

Only as parasites. Red Squirrel murderers. Needless killers.

Simon Temple ● 1858d

I would lay it's head gently on a busy carriageway somewhere and let nature take it's course.

Lucas Cox ● 1858d

I would say chuck it front of an enormous 4x4 driven by a Chiswick woman on South Parade who's barely tall enough to see over the steering wheel. Lots to choose from.

lol !'Although squirrels are predominantly herbivorous, they have been known to eat bird eggs, young birds, and smaller animals if their food source is scarce.'https://squirrelenthusiast.com/do-squirrels-eat-birds/ I didn't know:I'd better warn my pal about the bloodthirsty monster he's nurturing.Nature, red in tooth and claw.

...and keep the tail for that Davy Crocket/deranged mass murderer look.

Ben Gemmingen ● 1858d

I bet Lucas already had a boutique.

Simon Temple ● 1858d

:-)he did sound like he knew about these things.Road kill chic.

Ben Gemmingen ● 1858d

I think he's rather sick, myself. 'Lucas 'No Regrets' Cox'.  Great mate.

Simon Temple ● 1858d

Not exactly the St Francis way of dealing with it..lol

My son rescued a baby squirrel some years ago when his workmates wanted to bash it on the head with a shovel! He fed it every couple of hours with a pipette and kept it in the cat's carrier. Once it was weaned he waited until it was climbing and able to eat properly and then took it (now called Cyril) back to where he found it to release it. The cat was fascinated!

Vanessa Smith ● 1857d

It's edible. Can't you give it a 'rabbit chop' skin it and prepare it for the pot like with a bunny rabbit?

Bobbie Carnegie ● 1857d

No they are dear little animals and we enjoy watching them they are quite funny.

Janice Evans ● 1857d

I wonder what they taste like...

Squirrels have developed 'funniness' in their demeanour through a kind-of Darwinian history to detract us 'with laughs' from their innate horrific historic stealing and despicable preponderance to seek out and eat the young of other species of their bird eggs and hatched nestlings. UK urban sparrow decline can be levelled at grey squirrel's ability to access bird's nests rural and urban.

Bobbie Carnegie ● 1857d

Different species decline at different times and we always blame anotherspecies, its natures way of culling and we should not interfere with it, haveseen more sparrows this year.

It is a criminal offence under the Veterinary Surgeons Act 1966 for anyone not registered as a vet to diagnose and/or treat an animal. These are skills that require a minimum of 5 years intensive training and can in no way be described as a "hobby". Grey squirrels are indeed an invasive species and it is a criminal offence to release them, so once this squirrel has been taken in, it would not be legal to release it again. However, it is also an offence to keep a wild animal listed as a "destructive imported animal" without a valid licence.
