Mobile phone found - advice, please?

In the dusk tonight I heard a mobile phone ringing from one of the park benches.  No one nearby so asked the few people still in the park if they were missing a phone - no one was.  So I took it home and dialled the most recent number on the screen.   When someone answered I asked if they were missing a phone.  They hesitated and then said probably.  He said he has 8 phones so couldn't describe where he may have mislaid the phone or its make - or even if it was definitely missing. I asked why he had so many phones and he said 'lots of gigs, man.' What should I do? In the old days I would hand it in to a police station for them to sort but now there are no counters I am at a loss what to do.  I don't want to give a phone to someone it may not belong to.

Have a look in the list of contacts ... might be something like home/mum/dad? If there are any text messages you might get an idea of who the owner of the phone is regularly in touch with. Phone history might give you some clues as well. Doesn't sound if the last number called was to someone known to the owner!Good luck.

That's for landlines and business numbers if listed and not personal mobile phone numbers. If its a cheap phone we could well assume based on the phone call

Or maybe I've misunderstood.As is suggested downthread. if you're able to access them, you simply need to work through any contacts on the phone. Explain to that contact that you have found a phone with their contact no on - this phone and this number you're calling from - and do they know the owner of the phone. And most importantly do they have another way of contacting that person - aside from the phone number which you presently have ? If you eventually find such a contact ask them to get in touch with the owner who can then phone you - and to be sure maybe ask them to describe the actual phone the model number etc and make arrangements with them to collect it, possibly in a public place.Or failing that does the contact have any other detailsa physical address maybe?michael adams

Take out the SIm, turn off the phone (or remove the battery if it can be removed), then dispose of the phone(as environmentally responsibly as you can). Odds are you want nothing to do with this phone or anyone associated with it. Maybe  I've been watching too much TV but it seems fishy to me.
