I suppose he can't really complain of going aged 80, but it is still a sad loss - just weeks after it was announced he wasn't able to join the band on their forthcoming US tour. All those years keeping it together at the back while Mick'n'Keef paraded at the front of the stage. RIP Charlie.

Charlie had the ability to be both solid and laid back at the same time and his unusual style of not hitting the hi hat when he hit the snare drum always fascinated me. A true legend of his generation, he will be sadly missed. RIP Charlie, you were a one off and a true gent.

It’s easy to overlook how crucial a part Charlie played in the Stones’ sound with Jagger and Richards being such natural showmen, but it’s worth occasionally just paying attention to the drums to appreciate not only their sheer power and precision but the way they always fit so perfectly the mood of each and every song.I only saw them once in Edinburgh in the early sixties.  Sadly, I could hardly hear them at all as amplification in those days was no match for the volume of adolescent hysteria!
