Recycling batteries in Chiswick

Are there any battery recycling points in Chiswick?  Shame you can’t put them in the Council kerbside recycling collection.

Robert Dyas take used batteries.  So do Tesco metro and Marks & Spencer on Chiswick High Rd.

Yes, it was convenient when you could put them in the recycling box. I believe it was stopped as the batteries could represent a fire hazard at the recycling depot - pretty sure I heard that somewhere.

Lithium batteries can present a fire hazard, and can also result in poisonous fumes being emitted.

The problem is that people just chuck them in the regular rubbish if there is no recycling provision.  That might well have been the cause of the fire at the Kew tip recently.  If it wasn't the specific cause of that one, it was the cause of other fires at other locations.It would be less bad for them to bring back the kerbside battery recycling.

Sainsbury's have two battery recycling bins just inside the entrance from the car park.

They're generally too small to fit bigger batteries in eg old vacuum batteries. Curb side makes much more sense and would get a much higher recycling rate i'm sure.

Just about everyone I know recycles their batteries. We personally don’t use any big ones so the supermarket facilities are sufficient for us. They are invariably very full so others seem to be using them well. Of course if Stirling Road tip wasn’t so difficult to use  or be about to close, I would happily go there. Could Sainsburys add to their recycling area in the car park?

There have been a number of fires in waste and recycling trucks caused by batteries and gadgets with batteries in them.  So please don't put them in your waste and recycling!As I understand it all retailers selling more than a certain number or weight of batteries are supposed to provide a collection for used batteries.  I've found them in containers just inside many supermarkets and on the counter in Boots the Chemists and beside the counter in a Robert Dyas.  Just ask!  I remember searching the Scandi store (now sadly no longer there) in Ealing Broadway because they were always selling them in large numbers but I couldn't find a collection point for used ones.  When I asked - a drawer behind the counter was pointed out as the collection point.  To be fair I think they were just awaiting a new specific container for them.We don't use batteries much now - we just have a couple of wind up and solar torches/lights - but any spent batteries we do come across we put in a jam jar ready for taking to a collection point.Remember that a lot of electrical shops will take back small electrical items when you buy a similar new one (not necessarily at the same time but you will probably need to show a receipt), as well as recycling batteries and also DIY shops.  I remember years ago taking spent lightbulbs to Ikea.  Check out their websites!

Ealing has some street banks for small electricals and Hounslow take small electricals in their kerbside collections - remove the batteries.

Ealing Council will take batteries on recycling day. They ask that you put them in a clear (ish) bag on top of (not in) the wheelie bin. I used a small piece of tape to stop the bag falling off

Thanks Virginia, I didn’t know that. We don’t use a recycling bin, we use a see through bag. Let’s see if putting the batteries next to the bag works 👍

Leave them out on the day, if left overnight animals can pick them up, havefound a few on my lawn from the foxes and partly chewed.

Good tip but it’s true of all recycling, for us , can’t afford to leave overnight as we use plastic bags

https://www.rospa.com/home-safety/advice/product/button-batteriesThese batteries which I personally have seen used for watches, electronic car key zappers and electronic kitchen scales are small and shiny and attractive to children but can be lethal if swallowed as they can burn through the oesophagus.  There are some horrific stories online.

I put them in a small plastic bag and tie it to the top lid of my wheelie recycling bin which is what LBE advised originally
