E-bikes, Pedelecs and S-Pedelecs

Many people who think that they can't cycle can probably ride of these if they chose to investigate further. It would be interesting to hear from people who do ride one of these. We have a friend who does, who bought one second hand, and who loves it.A lot of them can be adjusted to make them suit all sorts of what might otherwise be called particular mobility problems.Yes, and there are people over 90 riding them.  I haven't heard of any over 100 - but there may be!

I worry about slow reactions in the case of the elderly 90-100 years, similar to children, if they meet a situation that requires quick thinking.  My neighbour gave up driving when he was 82 because he kept hitting things, mostly posts when parking.  He'd driven for about 60+ years all over the world.

Maggie, your neighbour is a very sensible person and hopefully otherswill realise when it's time to give up driving, thing is we have people onmedication etc., driving and are safe, my Dad was an elderlydriver and perfectly safe so it's up to them to decide when it's time andwe have to remember many of them are housebound without a car.

Would like to see a small car suitable for everyone not just the elderlymost of us don't need these large cars anymore.

It is very important to keep up with appointments for eyesight and hearing and of course the pandemic has meant that a lot of these will have been delayed.  We tend to forget that seeing and hearing are really important as far as memory is concerned.  I wonder what the waiting list for cataract operations is like now? There are apparently a lot of drivers registered who are over 100.  How many are actually still driving? The loss of hospital transport has been a blow.  Attendance Allowance was useful for paying for essential taxi trips.Nowadays you have to renew your licence at 70.  The photocard licence has to be renewed every 10 years.  It is an offence not to keep the details up to date.

Philippa Bond ● 1911d

70 seems fairly young to have to renew a licence so often as many willbe working well into their 70s and could be drivers.

Janice Evans ● 1911d

Renewing your licence at 70 (and every three years after that) is very straightforward. It does not mean you are required to retake your driving test. You do need to confirm you are not suffering any medical conditions which would impair your driving.

How do you keep up with changes in the Highway Code?  Wait until you get caught?

Philippa Bond ● 1911d

Philippa How do riders of e-bikes, pedelecs, s-pedelecs and cyclists keep up with changes in the Highway Code ? Assuming they've read in the first place - Hmmmm

Loraine Pemberton ● 1911d

How does anybody?  There are so many media outlets yet some people seem to be completely oblivious to half of what goes on in the world let alone in the streets around them.  It seems that children aren't even being taught by their parents/carers and learning how to cross roads nowadays...

You can look up Highway Code on-line, we prefer the book which you canpurchase fairly cheap on eBay.

Janice Evans ● 1910d

£2.69 and free post.

Janice Evans ● 1910d

If you buy The Highway Code on Ebay, make sure you are buying the latest edition.

Karen, there are some bogus on-line sites, my neighbour is in his 90sand still drives his little car, he was trying to renew and ended up on a sitethat was asking him to pay £57, being on the ball he ask me to find outif that was correct or should it be free.  I then made enquiries and told himit was free and to delete any other sites he had open, he is excellent for his age but has trouble using a mobile phone, he did keep the landline socan always contact him as I get his shopping for him, all the heavy items.

Good to see Sandi Toksvig on an old Qi last night recommending that everyone learn the Dutch Reach.  It is part of the Dutch Driving Test and to use it as a habit must be saving the lives of many cyclists.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GzIf80eSfCg
