Timpsons in car park at Richmond Sainsburys also offer a great service both digital and hard copies. Get the photos exactly right for you. A little bit cheaper than Snappy Snaps too.

How much do snappy cost? Went to Timpson and the photo kept failing. Might have had something to do with my reflection not being seen in mirrors, but he said it was due to bad light.

Can recommend Snappy Snaps. I needed one for my Irish passport and the Irish Passport Office  are quite pernickety

They have been overwhelmed by new requests for Irish passports from UK citizens as the Irish passport comes with the entitlements that we threw away.

I'm surprised to hear that you found the Irish passport office pernickety, David. They happily accepted a photo taken by my neighbour which the UK passport office then rejected, claiming that my head was 'tilted'!

After much searching in train stations and post offices for the now elusive photo booth I found out that our very own Chiswick Sainsburys, Essex Place Square has one.  £6 and it's just inside the main part of the store next to the customer service counter but usually surrounded by so many plants and packs of beer so you wouldn't really notice it is there.

The trouble with using a booth is that the passport office is very fussy and it's easy to make some tiny mistake which causes the photo to be rejected. Also, as previously mentioned, Snappy Snaps email you a digital version to upload to the website.

The machine in Sainsbury's tells you if the photo will be acceptable before you press the button. Quite good use of technology.
