A very interesting read, Michael. Read it yourself and you will see the following details, none of which apply to Chiswick: "Meanwhile the full, permanent scheme is still being developed. It will only be introduced once Hammersmith & Fulham Council has heard from residents" Imagine that, democratic engagement! “Whether you are cycling, walking, taking the bus or driving, these works are a stepping stone to help foster new ways to travel safely in Hammersmith" All manner of transit considered “Our goal is to make getting around in H&F better and safer for everyone – no matter how you travel. We’re committed to a final scheme to replace this trial. We will look at the data and listen to residents to develop the best Safer Cycle Pathway that we can.” See above "Once this interim scheme is completed, feedback from residents will complement the work underway from the Residents’ Cycling Commission, DRT and the DRWG – all of which will feed into the final design of the Safer Cycle Pathway" Note the third attempt at rebranding "This will ensure that the final Safer Cycle Pathway is a world-class piece of transport infrastructure working for all residents as we re-imagine Hammersmith town centre" "The permanent scheme features even more green areas, trees and benches to help make the Safer Cycle Pathway a world-class piece of transport infrastructure as we reimagine Hammersmith town centre" Green areas, trees and benches — almost sounds like urban design. We get a few saplings to replace mature trees cut down for an experiment We’ve also negotiated with TfL to fund a complementary scheme of improvements for a cycle highway along the A4 to make it ideal for faster and experienced commuting riders As many have long suspected, an A4 alternative is entirely plausible. Desired, in fact.  The improved cycle highway alongside the A4 will be a much better fit for those riders who simply want to get from A to B as quickly and safely as possible.

I'm sorry you think that a piece of infrastructure designed to protect cyclists from being hit by vehicles is the worst thing the council have done to Chiswick.I will concede that the temporary cycle lane isn't perfect - and I look forward to the permanent version which has significant improvements for pedestrians, cyclists and drivers (many of us are all three!).The sad truth is that the majority of pedestrian deaths, particularly of people over the age of 70, are caused by motorised vehicles hitting them in the road and on the pavements.Equally sad is the death toll of cyclists hit by motor vehicles - in fact there were more cyclist casualties (injuries and deaths) on the roads last year than pedestrian casualties (16,230 cyclists vs 14,717 pedestrians), as well as a 40% increase in fatalities. That's not to say that cycling has suddenly got more dangerous, it is a function of the significant increase in cycling in 2020 and the significant reduction of vehicles due to the lockdowns which hit far fewer pedestrians. That's not to say that cyclists don't hit pedestrians - they can and do - just nothing like the quantity or kill rate of cars, buses, lorries and trucks - even trains killed significantly more pedestrians than cyclists last year.Pedestrians and cyclists - of all ages, and there are plenty of older cyclists and children too - are vulnerable road users. There should be common cause to protect them all from the dangers of motorised vehicles - with money spent on well thought through infrastructure to enable them to make safe journeys.
