help with FIREFOX

A neighbour years ago installed Firefox on my Microsoft Outlook 2007 version.   It was all working fine but then it crashed (computer not used for a few weeks).   Stranger restarted it deleting lots of stuff he probably shouldn't.   I think computer now working OK but I am confused (again!!)  Usually Firefox upgraded itself but now it has vanished from the black bar along the bottom of the screen - I have to search for "Firefox" and keep getting asked if I want it to alter my hard drive - not at all sure whether or not I do, also is this is a free service or a system I have to buy???

The thing about allowing changes to your hard drive comes up whenever you download or update software and probably sounds more worrying than it is.

As above Jennifer, it sounds clear to me that  firefox wants to update and as your the administrator and you have possibly permissions set to ask you, it is asking for your permission to update.

Firefox is free and the pop-up will come up every time that you install it from fresh. It will NOT pop up for simple Firefox updates.Ensure that you download it ONLY from the official Mozilla (who 'own' Firefox) site:https://www.mozilla.org/en-GB/firefox/new/

Firefox is a free web browser provided by the Not For Profit Mozilla foundation. As such, you can fairly confidently say "yes" to giving it permission to do what it needs to do to install itself on your computer without worrying about access to your data or hard drive.Chrome (from Google) is another excellent, free and stable browser, but you are sharing a lot of data with Google - more than you realise. There are "privacy first" browsers - I'd probably include Safari in that (only for Macs), DuckDuckGo (smartphones only) and Opera - the latter being one you might want to try:https://www.opera.com/
