Agreed, Philippa.Locally people boycott local shops because of their concerns over road changes. Many of these traders give back to the community.Instead we see these folks shop on Amazon. A company not known for philanthropy of any kind. But I guess they're happy paying for Bezos' ticket to the stratosphere. How does one calculate particulates created by a rocket launch?

Save that Amazon top both the USA and EU lists for CSR (source CSR HUb).Not defending them, but if they top the list, it doesn't say much about the other multi-nationals.That said, I was pleasantly surprised to to find that the UK has the highest number of active CSR aware companies in Europe.

CSR?

Yes Amazon exhibit lots of stupidity.  Yesterday I wanted to buy some Britta Classic cartridges.  Boots and Amazon show 3 for 9.33 but a box of 6 was £27.68.  So I ordered 4 boxes of 3 (a year’s supply).  Sainsbury had a box of 3 for £14.  Yes I know these filters are old hat but at least they can be taken from one house to another when needed.Don’t start me on eBay.  Very weird pricing.

"..Amazon. A company not known for philanthropy of any kind."I guess you haven't heard of Amazon Smile then.

CSR = Corporate Social ResponsibilityYou can take a look at a company's website to see what they say about themselves and try to translate it into actuality and often have a bit of a laugh.I haven't looked for any recent reports on Amazon working conditions. They used to be a concern.

Richard, there was an interesting piece in the NY Times about two weeks ago about the working conditions at Amazon during the pandemic: https://www.nytimes.com/2021/02/18/magazine/amazon-workers-employees-covid-19.htmlOne would think the richest man on the planet and his company would be able to muster up a direct donation or two rather than contribute a mere fraction of "eligible" purchases to a charity of your choice. Skip the purchase and donate the entire amount yourself. Charities would make out better. Your advocacy is predicated on giving Amazon more money. Mine is based on putting money where your mouth is.

David Lesniak ● 1944d

David, you pay the same for goods bought from Amazon's main website as you do for goods bought via Amazon Smile. The difference is that in the latter case a portion of the money you pay goes to your chosen charity. I am not advocating anything, just pointing out that your statement was factually incorrect.

As I posted, Amazon top both the USA and EU lists for Corporate Social Responsibility (source, inter-alia CSR HUB).Again, I'm not defending them, but if they top the list, but is should lead you to question the CSR credentials of other high-profile companies.

I would definitely avoid the joint of meat in that article.

Is it incorrect, Richard? At present the Amazon method exists solely on the customer opting in, adding something to a cart then proceeding to checkout. Amazon isn't known for altruistic concern for human welfare and advancement. Look no further than its treatment of its own employees and their recent (ongoing) attempts to skew the rhetoric by running inane ads showing happy people working. That's called damage control and PR. Unlike the Gates Foundation, Amazon of its own accord does not endow institutions, schools nor hospitals or other socially-minded endeavors. But we did see Dolly Parton kick in a few quid to find a COVID vaccine whilst Bezos was picking out fabric for his yacht and deciding on colors for his rocket. But let's argue semantics, shall we?

I manage to avoid Amazon and have for some years, if I buy online then I try to buy from smaller places or directly from the manufacturer.People sometimes tell me how difficult it is to buy from other than Amazon but I’ve never found it too hard, it means an internet search but that’s not actually difficult. They may well top the CSR list but I feel their attitude towards paying fair taxes is appalling and has been for years. Meanwhile Bezos has billions, how can that be fair?

Alexandra McDevitt ● 1943d

You don't get money back guarantee if you buy outside Amazon or eBay,my partner lost a large amount buying direct from a Company.

I remember them selling electrical stuff that didn't meet British Standards and since then have been more careful.

Philippa Bond ● 1943d

Indeed, Amazon Marketplace was a bit like 'The Wild West' for a while with a lot of dodgy, mostly Chinese, poor quality copies of popular items. Remember the 'exploding' electric skateboards and scooters. they have cleaned up their act a lot but it's still from perfect.
