Chiswick Calendar shows the full awfulness of the Staveley Road Barrier

Has anyone seen the Chiswick Calendar attempt to portray the wonderful blossom on Staveley Road, while seeking to conceal the awful red and white barrier that blights Staveley Road and Park Road and the whole of Grove Park.  Shame on Chiswick Calendar for supporting those who wanted to implement this awful scheme in the first place.  Good on Chiswick Calendar for providing the evidence that by trying to conceal its awfulness its shows that there are much better solutions and Staveley Rd should be returned to it's full length glory and fit for the Queen once again.

Agreed. Out of all the harebrained traffic schemes that Hounslow Council has come up with, this is certainly one of the most pointless and unsightly. What’s wrong with speed bumps or a speed camera? I’d prefer neither but local authorities do seem to want to meddle with the status quo!

I don't now about all of that but I have seen lots of people walking in the road and standing in it to take photographs of the blossom and shared friendly exchanges with them about how beautiful it is. Many saying "who needs Japan". Not so easy for them to enjoy the full space when there were 5000 cars a day barrelling down the road, some close passing cyclists, some driving on the wrong side past the refuges, some doing 40 to 50 mph.Wonderful stuff and in its full glory right now. But each to their own. I guess some people liked the road better when it was a racetrack for people driving through Grove Park.

Oh I dunno, Paul, I used to walk the dogs there and recall the pavements either side of the road as being exceptionally wide. You could admire the blossoms on your side or the other side and take your insta selfie just fine from the kerb. No rhetoric required.

Shame the 5000 cars a day are now barrelling down Burlington Lane and Sutton Court Road instead.

Jonathan Simpson ● 2009d

Agreed Jonathan.

Paul Campbell ● 2009d

Oh Paul you really do exaggerate - it was not a racetrack and I think you need to go and get an eye test if you think it is an attractive addition to the road

The current barrier is a temporary arrangement and personally as someone who crosses that road almost daily to access the park its made a welcome difference and eased the risk from crossing. Fully support the changes made as have  others judging from the posters I have seen in windows. One house even had a big supportive banner a few months ago.

Sadly my understanding is that many of those in the immediate vicinity are very concerned as to the safety of the junction. particularly those with disabilities and the elderly and even the Council now agree there are problems according to local residents who say the sight lines are so bad on the bend of the junction that the council keeps on trying to take out more parking on both Park Road south and Staveley Rd, compounding problems.  The traffic lights are regularly out too, and must be costing a small fortune. There are much better solutions. The article below goes to a range of wider disability issues with these types of traffic measures that have been ignored as reported in the Times.https://www.thetimes.co.uk/article/2581a9f2-a5e3-11eb-9b76-9500a3917e5f?shareToken=2787f702098ea4d501a884b1363b11fa

Traffic coming out of Park Road at speed is a danger to cyclists who are forced into its direction to get through the small gap in the blockade.Looks awful too - like a Lego version of East Berlin as imagined by a Toy Town Trump.

Jane O? If you are Jane O'Donnell then let me know so I can add you to the list of people I don't respond to on this forum. People are supposed to use full names here as anonymity is frowned upon. Just like they are not supposed to use Nextdoor for fund raising for private companies. They get reported for that and their posts get removed because that is a well-moderated social media platform. If you are somebody else then I will just point out I didn't say the barrier is an attractive addition to the road. I said the absence of 5000 cars a day, many of which were breaking the law including using it as a racetrack, makes the road a space for people. The huge reduction in cars caused by the presence of a barrier makes the road much more attractive, safer and healthier than it was before. As Matt says it is temporary. Hopefully it will be an arc of cherry trees and a parklet when it is made permanent.

Paul Campbell ● 2008d

Other than the fact that the barrier is clearly visible in the centre of the photo, you are spot on.

Carl Wynne ● 2008d

The Chiswick Calendar is disgraceful in its totally biased support for the awful LTNs and the cycling fraternity.

"Jane O? If you are Jane O'Donnell then let me know so I can add you to the list of people I don't respond to on this forum"Paul, once done with your tantrum and cancelling, you'll note Jane's name appears in full on the thread. I do so love you refuse to engage with anyone with whom you might not agree. Any toys left in the pram? I do so also love you nor your cronies have had a go at Chiswick Calendar for posting a picture of a child on his bike. It gets your dander up elsewhere, why not there? Or is it your son posing for a photo op so you're proud Papa Paulo?
