No takers?  Chucking it all out tomorrow into black bag rubbishj.

Jennifer selig ● 2031d

You could try putting in boxes on the pavement for people to help themselves.

Rima Jones ● 2030d

Good idea.  My thrifty nature - can't bear waste.  Thanks.

Jennifer selig ● 2030d

It’s surprising how much of anything useful goes on sunny days. Pieces of rope, coat hangers.........

Rima Jones ● 2030d

oOt to put a dampener on things - but technically that is fly-tipping!

Vanessa Smith ● 2030d

Not to put a dampener on things - but technically that is fly-tipping!

Vanessa Smith ● 2030d

Not if it’s in an addressed recycling box outside your house.

Rima Jones ● 2030d

One person's recycling is another person's fly-tipping. I guess if you have a garden wall to put items on with a sign saying "Help Yourself" that would be the former.

Richard Greenhough ● 2030d

We often leave items out but within the Garden, gone by next day.

Janice Evans ● 2030d

Jennifer, would say that with electrical items remove the plug but leave a note on saying its in working order.

Janice Evans ● 2030d

'In Response To:Not if it’s in an addressed recycling box outside your house.'Assuming that it's your offical collection day of course. Best to leave within the curtilage of your property.

Vanessa Smith ● 2030d

Definitely not if it’s on official collection day!A box of assorted items which are useful but not collected by the council needn’t  go into the black bin.It isn’t possible for all of us to leave the boxes within the curtilage of our own property even on collection day.A number of us have been doing this for a long time without any problem at all.A notice saying “Help Yourself”  means that the assorted items disappear very quickly.Re-use comes before recycling. However small electricals and electronics ( no bigger than a microwave ) can be put in carrier bags inside one of the recycling boxes for the weekly collection. As can textiles including shoes tied together in pairs.

I needed a new vacuum cleaner. Spent ages searching for the right thing.Gave up and went out.To my amazement the tenant next door was relocating and had just put on the pavement a splendid Miele with all attachments included and a note saying free to a good home. Working order.Very quickly went into my place for a trial run.Brilliant. Required long lead exactly right and looked as if it had never been used.Couldn’t believe my luck and sent a thank you.

Rima Jones ● 2030d

Couple of weeks back someone took a toaster we had left out, it's a great way of recycling.

Janice Evans ● 2030d

Some people might just take them for parts etc, but that's fine if it can be reuse.

Janice Evans ● 2030d

I think as long as you take responsibility for whatever you put out and it is obvious that it is unwanted and free to the taker (and not a visiting bicycle/child's scooter) and you take it in when it rains and don't leave it out for ages it's fine. It is better on a wall and not on the pavement. However sometimes it does go wrong and there are some rather officious Council enforcement officers eg the ones who gave a PCN to someone who put some apples from the garden in a box on the pavement so that passers-by could help themselves... Sense was seen and it was rescinded.

We never put boxes out if it’s going to rain and find it’s best at weekends when people have time to stop and look.Note that electrics and textiles put out for council recycling collection must be in separate plastic bags inside one of the coloured boxes to keep them dry and stop people from cutting the cables off for selling to dealers! We stack the boxes with red one on top and net over.Help yourself boxes aren’t left out overnight.

I arranged bulky rubbish  collection with hammersmith council. Put out a cooker and old armchair at the designated time with note. Both were taken before council  arrived.  Also I cleared put my kitchen  cupboards and my daughter puts lond of things on Olio. All were collected like magic. It's an app for food sharing but has non food section. Really recommend it

Beccy Thorp ● 2028d

Does Olio have a wanted section too?  There's also www.trashnothing.com which is an easy Freecycle/Freegle interface to use and which also has a wanted section.  Don't think that Jennifer will be using those though. There are people who are happy to take your unwanted stuff and who are unlikely to be hunting on the offchance in charity shops (which I think are still closed).  The great thing is that these people do the taking away free.

Philippa Bond ● 2028d

Spirit optics etc in sep. marked plastic bag on top of black bag all taken away in today's refuse collection.  Heated glass top electric tray still here - neighbour will take for me next week to Feltham recycling place.  Meanwhile also left 2 radios with flexes attached and broken toaster with flex attached in marked bag left beside Blue Box taken by Council recycling today as well.  The reason I've not got involved with Freecycle - don't have smart phone so can't post pic - can't lift much to take anywhere and won't/can't have anyone in my house - still, as am highly vulnerable and  shielded.

Jennifer selig ● 2028d

Well done.BTW Space Waye is marked as being closed to vans and lorries atm as the weighbridge is broken. Still open to cars though.Sainsburys and Waitrose I notice are doing TAKE BACK on small electricals if you buy a new similar item from them.  The original does not have to be from them and the one you are taking back does not have to be taken back at the same time as you buy.  Check their websites for details.  It would be interesting to hear if anybody has used this service.
