Wow the figures for London are looking really positive, well done everyone who followed the guidelines and had the vaccine, it looks like it is working, fantastic news, sadly Europe entering a third wave and lockdowns and the German health minister saying cases are growing exponentially and to expect many deaths, very sad if only they had worked harder to keep the Brits on side.

"if only they had worked harder to keep the Brits on side."Eh?

Ken Munn ● 2048d

Mmm,a bit flummoxed by that too. That is amazing though.I wonder which politician or civil servant servant had the foresight to see what might happen and persuaded this government to take a punt and invest in vaccine research (the UK ,Imperial,Oxford,GSK and others being world leaders in this) .We'd be toast without them.

My thinking being if the EU had given some concessions to Cameron perhaps the vote would have gone the other way and remain won, I was a remainer. Then just perhaps we would have worked together during the pandemic and Europe would not be in this mess. Of course it could have hindered our incredible vaccine achievement, I guess we will never know.

Main article in the D.Telegraph Magazine today has story of Kate  Bingham who was asked by Boris Johnson early last May "We need you to stop people from dying" to head up a taskforce to find a safe coronavirus vaccine.  It's quite a read.  "Ask a busy woman"  holds true!

Cameron did renegotiate. I’m not sure what else the EU could have done. We were not in the Euro, we were non-Schengen and we had a veto, we had the power to return any EU citizens after three months if they could not support themselves,. The Leave campaign lied and was supported by the tabloids who had detested.the EU for years. People blamed the EU for the failings of our government who had doubled the national debt and seen an increase in the number of people deemed to be in poverty. Johnson said during the campaign that no country in its right mind would contemplate leaving the Single Market and look at us nowBut we are where we are. It’s done now although no one seems particularly enthusiastic about it.

Those who voted Brexit had seen the red flag on a number of occasions and it was nothing to do with anything else, parts of our Country had suffered neglect which leads to neglect of the people.

Could get nasty, and stupid. UK and EU need to work together, no one will win in a nationalist vaccine war. Macron and Von der Leyden issue AZ blockade threats and this is being countered by Pfizer, who point out they need essential lipids from UK factories.https://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2021/03/19/pfizer-urges-eu-back-away-vaccine-blockade-threat/

Scientists are always working on vaccines.  There are outbreaks of illnesses around the world all the time and it has been because of this continuous hard work and research that we haven't had another deadly pandemic sooner.  The scientific community across the world keep in touch with each other, they have often worked with each other and oviously have some similar interests. Some countries allow freer transfer of information than others and we are indebted to those who warn the world and share their experiences and knowledge when this happens. It was interesting to hear Michael Rosen talking about his experience of having had Covid and its consequences and how consultants are now taking more interest in patient forums where what is now called Long Covid is being discussed.  There is always more to learn.I heard Michael Rosen interviewed before he got Covid where he spoke about his feelings about life - he wasn't ready to die because he had projects, whereas another interviewee was far more ready and accepting of the idea of death.  I do wonder what happened to her.Michael Rosen recited a poem of his experience but I haven't found it online.  Perhaps it is in his new book!

"UK and EU need to work together, no one will win in a nationalist vaccine war."This message really needs to be hammered home. We now have the opportunity to show our true colours and help our beleaguered neighbours quietly and without any fuss.

All this blockade talk but do they know before talking that key components for the Belgium plant come from the UK. With Novavax not long away we most likely don't need to worry about blockades from Belgium, but then its up to them to stop the rhetoric and allso convince its own citizens that its safe and good to go for all When the UE states that those with high vaccination should take a back seat that means everyone but themselves based on numbers with the stop-start and half the population in some countries not now wanting a jab because of leaders spouting concerns.Macrons latest is that the  AstraZeneca vaccine be for over 55s only

Ben,  remember they move all the research labs to Oxford and mention it a while back as could not remember who had done it,  what foresight.

The Vaccine Taskforce story is fascinating and so many brilliant women involved, Teresa Lambe, Maddy McTernan, Kate Bingham to name a few. They explain how everything they did had to be top secret so other countries like Russia didn’t know what they were doing and of course they wanted to secure the vaccine ahead of others as it is the only back to any sense of normality and economic security. So much going in the background to protect us and only now they can talk about it. A massive thank you to them all for working 24/7 on our behalf and for just being brilliant 👏👏👏👏👏
