Dodgy practices seem to be a besetting problem with some roofing companies. A few months ago, a friend of mine had her roof replaced. She was satisfied with the work, paid the gang leader the agreed sum, and off they went. However, about six weeks later they came back with some confusing story about unpaid VAT and demanding a further sum of several thousand pounds. She made it quite plain she wasn't going to pay another penny, made a phone call appearing to summon help, and they cleared off. So far, she has heard no more from them.
