If you wanted to build a fighter from scratch you couldn't really do better than Marvin.

Leonard never beat him either. A draw maybe, and Hagler would still have kept his title.

I remember that fight well. It was very close but I thought Hagler won it by a round. Leonard suckered the judges with his deliberate flair tactics and they didn't really watch the boxing itself.

Yes, it was close, and I can see how Leonard's flair may have helped him with the judges, but I thought boxing etiquette was that you had to beat the champ fair and square. That certainly didn't happen. Both put up an incredible fight, and I think it's harsh to say that either 'lost'.

You're right Michael. The challenger has to TAKE the title. I don't think Leonard did that and I don't think it's harsh to say anyone lost. One person has to lose unless it's a draw which is very rare. You remember that Leonard's tactic was to flurry in the last 30 seconds - certainly in the first half. Didn't do any damage but the judges thought, wow, how amazing he is. I'll give him the round. Also Leonard was a bit cowardly. He never wanted to fight Hagler. It was only after the Mugabi fight he decided. What a murderous fight that was. Leonard should have stepped up in 82/83 but was too scared.
