You’re right that people don’t feel safe on our streets, Janice. We know young men are at most risk, just as we know women are most at risk of violence at home, from their partner. This is a moment, though, for women to speak out about the flashers, the men who grind up against them on packed tube trains, the cat calls and the mumbled obscenities. All the things that go unreported and unmentioned but add up to make women, in particular, feel unsafe coming home from work or school. Or coming home from the gym, or the cinema or the pub, because we don’t live under the Taliban, we’re entitled to go out and feel safe from low-level abuse we’ve all experienced and might, just might, escalate into something else.. I know everyone’s sad and shocked about Sarah’s murder but for some women, lots of women, it’s triggered more than just sadness. She did everything right, it was only 9pm, she was sober and she was dressed head to toe in winter clothes but she abducted on a London street. It feels like enough is enough.
