How can we make washing machines last?

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-56167505The chucking out of major appliances without even cleaning a filter or doing any troubleshooting is just creating more unnecessary waste. You can troubleshoot problems online. You can often download instruction manuals online if you have lost them. You can buy spare parts online - sometimes just simple things like new baskets for the dishwasher or new filters for your jug kettle - which are not good enough reasons to dispose of an appliance can easily be sourced. You can always ask on this website to find a recommendation for someone who can fix it if it involves the electrics and it is more complicated.

I have an old Philips washing machine still adequately churning from the early 1980s given me by emigrating friends to Australia. It's not plumbed into hot water. I pour in 3 or 4 boiled kettles through 'the soap hole' at start. Also, irritated by what seemed an inordinate time waiting before the door could be opened I took top off fiddled about and found a wire I was able to unclip that disabled the door-lock thus allowing me to open immediately after wash is complete. Have had to replace a frayed drive belt about 10 years ago which I did as I recall following a DIY YouTube demo. There are useful YouTube guides from the likes of eSpares that can make of all of us gadget mechanics when spares are needed for our domestic machines rather than buying new machines.

If you can, buy a decent quality machine in the first place; prferably from a manufacturer who maintains supplies of spare parts. Washing soda and the occasional 'boil' wash with with a cupfuls of distilled malt vinegar will keep the pipes and dispensers nice and clean.

I just use a spoonful of soda crystals in each wash- to soften the water, much cheaper!
