Long ago my father told me the tale of Maurice Edelman, Labour MP for a constituency in Coventry then a big centre for vehicle and component manufacturing. My father was a jobbing builder in green and pleasant Buckinghamshire where Edelman, a best selling author, owned a large family home.My father often did work on the Edelman home. At the end of the 1950s my father was impressed by how once a month Maurice would leave his Jaguar parked at home and drive to his midlands constituency in his shiny little mini. The Edelman's had a flat in London (Marylebone) and (I think) sold up in Buckinghamshire in the early sixties to live in London. Interestingly, his passionate interest in the former Conservative leader and the only British Prime Minister of Jewish origin, led to him renting a wing of Hughenden Manor, Disraeli’s home, from the National Trust for the last three years of his lifeMaurice Edelman's daughter Sonia was married at the Synagogue in Amersham that my grandfather built. She is a emeritus professor of education at London University's Institute of Education - and still working part time at 85.
