Thanks Chris

He sounded very unwell that last morning, started an hour late, struggled on air for a while and then was replaced by Ian dale (I think it was).  He's had terrible bouts of cystitis over the last few months and this may be the cause.  The comment about MM was first said by another presenter on another station and Steve merely repeated it.  I miss him terribly, it's not worth being awake at 4am without him!

Viv Griffiths ● 2065d

I am awake very early VivDue to pain and I always enjoy his banterHopefully he will be back soon

Jon morris ● 2065d

It's reported on one of the Steve Allen's Appreciation Facebook sites that his friend John Warrinhton said in the last 24 hours that Steve was still VERY unwell and wouldn't be back for another week. His birthday is on 17th March so that will be a target for him.He is a favourite for many and started his career as a DJ at a Biscuit Factory off the  Great West Road.My reading between the lines suggests that he should pay attention to his numb feet and high glucose levels. (9 Steve not 19!).He has so many friends and contacts that he is a Celebrity! What will he say on his return one wonders. His opening story will be a Cassius Clay/Sonny Liston moment!

JimThanks for the update

....and thank you Jon for airing the subject.Hope you don't suffer too much with your pain..and get plenty of lay-ins till the 17th.I've met Steve many times in years gone by..(we had mutualfriends/contacts)..and so his voice has become so recognisable over the airwaves. As you probably know...Steve lives in Twickenham these days opposite Marks and Spencers and Paul Cooper's greengrocery shop.

LBC RetweetedLBC@LBC·4hThank you to everyone who’s got in touch to ask about Steve Allen. Steve is still feeling unwell and taking a few more days off. He’s asked us to thank you for all your kind messages.

I never did know how he came to fall on his halogen oven, can anybody put me straight?

Viv Griffiths ● 2064d

I try not to listen as I prefer to sleep, but he must have had the oven on the floor I guess. I have listen to LBC since it opened in 1973

Chris Lucy ● 2064d

Thanks all for this thread.  I'll certainly now give Chris Allen and LBC a go.I'm basically an R4 and R3 man.  But I do like the channels that do a roundabout news service with a mix of lighter and interesting stuff.  So I've enjoyed time spent on Radio 5 – particularly late night on ear-phones and even very late night with Dotun Adebayo.  But alas, in the mornings I keep running into a broadcasting disaster called Chris Warburton - and usually end up in trouble with the wife for shouting at the radio.

Stuart Kerr ● 2064d

I hope he recovers soon... but I can't stand his style of presenting, surprised he doesn't get sued on a regular basis!

Fay Kazemi ● 2064d

I doubt if it's your sort of thing Stuart, a lot of waffle about inconsequential people and things (zlebs and shopping).  It's very easy to doze off and not miss anything.  But I miss him like mad.

Viv Griffiths ● 2064d

Viv Griffiths ● 2064d

I also dote on Nick Abbott.

Viv Griffiths ● 2064d

My eyes light up when I see your name Viv!

Jim Lawes ● 2064d

I find Steve Allen intensely irritating, but have to admit that he's part of my gradual-return-to-consciousness process in the morning, at least until the Today programme starts.

Colin Jordan ● 2064d

Definitely give him a miss stu. When hes back your have hours about his medical issues. If not days

Julian Pavey ● 2064d

Thanks for the tip Julian..... but on a side-note, there's nothing wrong with inconsequential things, Viv.  Some of the funniest, belly-laugh inducing radio entertainment has always been based on absolute trivia bordering on total bollox.  Yet somehow that sort of idiotic nonsense stuff resonates in our wit-juices and says something deep to us weird humans. The Goon Show obviously. Hancock's Half hour.  We can still hear recordings of those fabulous programmes on R6.  Far more recent, I was hooked for several years on Radio 1's brilliant and very original Mark and Lard show.  Won 3 Sony Awards so it must have had something going for it.But today?  Oh I dunno.  I'm all ears and always ready, open and willing to be entertained. But there's so much crashingly dull (humanely important) Empathy Radio around. So much hysterical faux laughter (stage-fright) between untalented presenters (even weather forecasters and traffic reporters) who are far less amusing than our washing-up machine on number 4 on a jolly summer day.Where are todays naturals?  Anyone have an idea where best to tune in?

Stuart Kerr ● 2064d

OK...give Nick Abbott a shot, LBC Friday, Saturday and Sunday 10.00pm-1.00am.  Pure nonsense on Friday, more political the other two days.

Viv Griffiths ● 2064d

Nick Abbott is absolutely the best. As for Steve Allen, I wish him well, but his only talent is to talk for three hours without taking a breath. Unfortunately it is all total twaddle.

Stephen Gould ● 2064d

Shucks Jim, just seen you comment!  Thanks.  Blushes.  Another glamorous rendezvous after lockdown?

Viv Griffiths ● 2064d

Roy Hudd usually churns out a good few laughs.

Roger Talbot ● 2063d

Sorry I must be losing the plot! Roy Hudd is dead.

Jeffrey Cope ● 2063d

Worth listening to, she has fascinating interviewees (Linda Calvey this evening) and holds a regular conversation, not trying to score points or doing all the talking.

Viv Griffiths ● 2060d

6am to 8am ever Saturday, Sounds of the Sixties with Tony Blackburn starts the day on an update note for me.He has a smile on his voice, tells silly jokes and plays stuff you may not have heard for a  while that can trigger some good memories.Mind you have the mute button handy as some 60s pop is just plain awful.

Adrian Irving ● 2059d

Hooray!
