Just as I was thinking there were far fewer than previous years when suddenly a dozen or so smallish speckled birds land in the garden. My bird book identified them as redwings. They left as a group to mob a pair of magpies.

No sooner had I posted the last note than my neighbour called me into the street to watch a pair of green parrots- one on the roof standing guard while the mate pecked to bits the plastic Louvre cover on the shower air vent. I managed to get a photograph but sadly have no idea how to post it on the Forum.Little beggars- there are too many of them and need culling as they are doing a lot of damage as well as taking most of the seed mix in the caged feeder.
If you encourage larger birds into your garden they will stay away.

I've had a delightful Robin and a pair of marauding Magpies this afternoon

Lovely day for the Big Garden Birdwatch! It says the best time of day is early morning or mid-afternoon, not midday. Something tells me I'll be entering a big fat zero!

What's the tiny brown bird with one lance corporal stripe and white cheeks?

Housemartin ?

Goldcrest ? Just suggestions
Well, I did mine from 10-11am. Spotted two blue tits, 3 woodies, a dunnock, robin and magpie. I'm going to do another one tomorrow early afternoon and choose the one with most birds spotted. Sadly my woodpecker didn't make an appearance.
Small back garden, Brentford - a group of 16 starlings and one wood pigeon!

Janice.I can assure you that encouraging large birds doesn’t make the parakeets go away.At first light this morning the huge sparrow hawks arrived on the chimney pots as they always do, waiting for prey to appear. One of them suddenly took off whilst the other one stayed there watching.Suddenly a huge flock of parakeets took off in the same direction across the roof tops and they are now all returning.I don’t know if the sparrow-hawk managed to catch one but there are definitely at least a hundred of them back in the trees here.

A number of large white birds have just flown over. Gulls?
Well, today was better. 1 blackbird, 1 robin, 3 great tits, dunnock x 2, 1 magpie, 2 wood pigeons and my woodpecker arrived!Gulls, yes. Lots flying around.

Hi Rima, they don't seem to like Rooks or Seagulls, my sister never has theparakeets hanging around her garden and there are plenty about.

Stephen Gould: "What's the tiny brown bird with one lance corporal stripe and white cheeks?"I'm not sure, but it could be coal tit as they have white cheeks and wingbars and are very small (blue tit size-ish). They're not really brown though.Today our small garden gave up, in chronological order:Ring-necked parakeetBlue titRobinStarlingGreat titCoal titChaffinchWood pigeonMagpieDunnockCollared dove.A jay turned up almost as soon as the hour was up and we also had herring gulls and carrion crows overhead but I don't think they count under the RSPB rules.Mammal/vermin wise there were three grey squirrels, two foxes and a brown rat. Having lived here three years the rat only made its first appearance last week so that's a bit ominous.

The coal tit bird does have a buff colour underside so could be mistaken for brown.
This is true, Janice, and its olive-y back can similarly look brown in these drear winter days.
