I think most people have to be honest, compliance has visibly dropped over time, which is to be expected. I don't know what can be done post-Christmas - some kind of lockdown or Tier 3+ will likely be required, but the combination of pandemic fatigue and arguably the worst month of the year will be too much for many. Let's hope the vaccine can get us returning to normal-ish by the summer.

Politically homeless ey, welcome to the moderates world for the last 4 years......

I thought your posted modernist for the moment. Then realised that decade has gone, but not forgotten.

I think these Christmas relaxations are bonkers, yes people want to see family and friends we get all that. but judging by the amount of people still not complying with the mask wearing and space requirements, it'll be a recipe for a massive outbreak of Covid next month. Bozza just doesn't want to be seen to be the party pooper but that would probably be the safest option.

Interesting to note that the contrast between Boris and Sturgeon in Scotland continues. Last week she ignored medical advice and refused to take Edinburgh down to Scottish Tier 2. Businesses took her to court and lost, Tory and Labour politicians lambasted her decision. Now Edinburgh's Covid rate has risen 33% in a week. "It would have been like pouring paraffin on red embers" she said today to her critics.I think Boris has missed the point if he thinks ducking necessary decisions are the way to become Mr Popular. Sturgeon comes over as the strict headmistress. However, the much lower incidence of Covid north of the border may explain her relative popularity.
John Connelly ● 2144d
"Now Edinburgh's Covid rate has risen 33% in a week."And this is an indicator that Sturgeon got it right ?
Richard Greenhough ● 2144d
Measures will only work if people follow the guidance. Clearly there is widespread flouting of the guidelines, refusal to self isolate or co operate with track and trace. Not helped by incompetent government. I fear it will worsen after the loosening of restrictions at Christmas. Keeping schools open is a government priority but for a few weeks now secondary school aged children have had the highest rate of infection and this has caused a spread to the wider community. More children will become infected this week in school and some will pass the infection on to family members, grandparents over Christmas.
David Turner ● 2144d
YES. She was being pushed to go down to Tier 2 and refused to because she feared the Covid rate would rise by easing.
Thanks to East Londoner, we are now in Tier 3 as punishment.
Anthony Tan ● 2144d
They were totally irresponsible to allow pubs to open when they did especially as they allowed people to drink as much as they wanted to as long as they ate a Scotch Egg!!! It was obvious that the system would be abused. It is right that they have now put us into Tier 3 because the people of London have not observed the rules. Every day we see morons spreading the virus. A full lockdown should follow until everyone has been vaccinated. In the meantime I congratulate Sadiq Kahn for making a stand about the schools and hopefully responsible schools will ignore the Education Secretary and listen to the Mayor of London and close schools immediately.

RG Here we go the ‘shirt-n-tie’ man who believes in ridiculous stats made up to put fear into the vulnerable.

Scotland has done no better than England. It's just that Sturgeon is so much better at communicating and keeping her electorate on her side.
Susan Kelly ● 2144d
East Londoners?Start with Chiswick - so many ppl without a mask, sad.
Katja Urban ● 2144d
Susan, the death rate overall is not much better in Scotland than in England. However, current infection rate is roughly half that of England. Sturgeon, who I personally dislike politically, has not gone for the easy options, unlike Boris. She has avoided b@@@shit like "whack a Mole", "world beating test and trace", and, at one point earlier in the year suggesting it would be all over by Christmas. In England in the last few weeks Boris gave in to pressure to the London establishment and placed it in Tier 2. In Edinburgh the Scottish establishment were made to suffer as much as their compatriots in the west despite their demand they be placed in Tier 2 due to Sturgeon's intransigence. If I had a relative in London dying of the virus in the next few weeks I would ponder whether a braver decision by Boris might have saved their life.
For a while the infection rate was bad here in west London while the east was much better. Now, it's the other way round. We can't divide London up.

shops and shopping centres are open. No track and trace. No social distancing. theatres, pubs and restaurants with track and trace and social distancing are shut.
Tim English ● 2143d
"shops and shopping centres are open."Indeed and people are irresponsible. Just look at what the morons did at Harrods. Total fools. We need a TOTAL LOCKDOWN to deal with these people.
Steve Taylor ● 2143d
Mayor Kahn now is making total sense. Great that the pubs are closed but still a small step. Schools must also close today as we prepare for a total lockdown.
Unfortunately Greenwich Council has now backed down and has been bullied into submission by the Tory clowns to keep the schools open under threat of legal action. We can only pray that no School Staff catch Covid due to this government's irresponsible behaviour. It is shocking that Gavin Williamson won't listen to the education staff and people on the front line.
The reality is simple the majority of people are behaving responsibly it’s always the minority that spoil it for everyone. There is a very fine balance between locking us all up in our homes and killing thousands of businesses which will have a far bigger impact than covid on people’s lives. Whatever any government does they will be dammed. So people do the right thing and follow the guidelines, get vaccinated when you can then life will start to resemble something like normal.
Jayne Thorburn ● 2143d
"which will have a far bigger impact than covid on people’s lives."What has a bigger impact than 'death' on one's life?
It is astounding how out of touch the Education Secretary is to believe that there is any education or teaching going on in the final week of school before Christmas. He should have done the sensible thing and tried to save lives by closing schools from today as suggested by the Mayor of London. Now more virus will be spread because of his stupidity.
Children need education, are at very low risk of catching covid, if they are not at school groups of them play in the parks which is what we witnessed first lockdown, keep educating the kids they have missed a lot this year so every day counts
Millions will lose their jobs and businesses, get into greater debt, the impact on their mental wellbeing is enormous and could last a lifetime for many so a balanced approach is needed plus of course people’s behaviour makes a massive difference. If you are sensible, keep your distance, wear a mask and hand sanitise the risk of catching covid reduces significantly. The problem is too many people are not doing this which is a shame as their selfish behaviour has a massive impact on millions
"keep educating the kids they have missed a lot this year so every day counts"Every educationalist knows there is NO education going on in the last week. There is, however, a MASSIVE risk of teaching staff catching Covid. The governments decision to keep the schools open during this high risk time is purely financial to keep parents at work instead of having to look after their offspring for a few days..People will die!!
Steve Taylor ● 2142d
"the impact on their mental wellbeing is enormous and could last a lifetime for many so a balanced approach is needed"On balance, dying tops a few mental health issues. People need to get over this nonsense about 'mental health' which is mainly because I,I,I, I can't do what I am used to doing!
Covid daily updateAll the media questioning why we are allowing Christmas to go-aheadIf they did they would be asking why are you cancelling Christmas which will put much stress on mental health. But then that is the answer to why we are allowing Xmas to go ahead. A compromise You just can't win with the media. Maybe we should cancel the media for a few months. One question becomes another 5 of the same

What no Beth Rigby Incase you are missing her...WARNING OF BAD LANGUAGE
👍👍 people are idiots do we actually need any government telling us what we can do at Christmas, the message is very clear don’t mix households unless you have no choice for some reason, don’t risk the health of our elderly until after they have had the vaccine I think this is pretty basic common sense but clearly most people have none. The media are a a complete waste of time, covid is real has already mutated which was predicted all viruses mutate. People!
Jayne Thorburn ● 2142d
Just a few posts ago you said that the majority of people are behaving responsibly and in your latest that most people have no common sense and will not adhere to the guidelines. Which is it?
Stewart Jones ● 2142d
Of course the majority of people are total idiots. They voted for Brexit!!!! How do expect them to know how to behave with Covid-19? Gatherings, drinking, spreading disease, jogging and spreading 'mist'!
If people drink to much alcohol they are going to forget about social distance etc.
