Dominic Cummings & Jersey

My friend who lives in Jersey tells me that her government has taken Cummings on to advise them on the implications for the island of the UK leaving the EU in six weeks. Now, my friend is 80 and has had a stressful year and I hope she's got hold of the wrong end of the stick.Anyone heard anything about this?

The EU and Turkey signed a Customs Union agreement in 1995. In 1999 Turkey was officially recognised as a candidate for full membership.Negotiations for full membership began in 2005 but progress was slow. Only 16 of the 35 Chapters necessary to complete the accession process have been formally opened. The refugee deal between Turkey and the European Union in 2016 was supposed to accelerate negotiations after previous stalling. Visa-free travel for Turks through much of the EU was the one solid result.Since then the accession negotiations have effectively stopped. The EU has accused the Turkish Government of human rights violations and lack of respect for the rule of law. In 2017 the EU declared that changes in Turkish policies would violate the Copenhagen criteria of eligibility for EU membership. The EU's General Affairs Council stated in 2018 that "Turkey has been moving further away from the European Union." Turkey’s accession negotiations have therefore effectively come to a standstill. No work on the much needed modernisation of the EU-Turkey Customs Union is being undertaken.450 years ago Queen Elizabeth I found herself isolated from her European neighbours. She made alliances with the Ottoman Sultan and the Shah of Iran. Plus ça change, plus c'est la même chose.

Sam, given the problems the EU is having with Poland and Hungary I don't think they are going to let in any more members of the 'awkward squad'. I think Montenegro will be the next state to accede to the EU the others being  Albania, North Macedonia, Turkey and Serbia. Montenegro uses the Euro as its currency.  Of course, if Johnson continues his ham-handed attempts to woo the Scots, Scotland could get there first.
