Acton Lane Reopening Postponed Again

The sign on the Thames Water roadworks on Acton Lane had previously said the work would finish on 13/11. I went to have a look yesterday and it has now been changed to 20/11. They have changed it several times of the course of the project so I wouldn't get your hopes up.

There is also a 'no smoking' sign and gas emergency number board on the other side of the bridge on the footpath. This area has been dug up multiple times, seems it will be again. It is madness, regardless of one's desire to see more cycle infrastructure, to make such a narrow junction and congested route the only way for vehicular traffic to cross the tube lines. Madness or incompetence, or both.

Now the 27 November according to the item on the front page. I think the reported council anger may have something to do with the realisation that the closer the reopening of Acton Lane gets to Christmas the louder the appeals of local retailers will be to postpone the reimposition of the TGT access restrictions. Hounslow will be very lucky to give up the extra cash this has been generating.

They must also be pretty angry with themselves. It cannot be a surprise to anyone this road has been dug up all the time. It would be dumb to then rely on this as the only legal route across the tube lines. Seems the gas leak will mean more digging after Thames Water finish. What do Hounslow do then?

If they can admit that “half closing” one road in Chiswick has caused major traffic problems that they had to open TGT to relieve congestion how can they not see that closing a “whole road”would creat a similar scenario?

I had heard that the opening of Acton Lane was being delayed on purpose in order to keep Turnham Green open until after the lucrative Christmas Period. Obviously this can't officially be admitted, otherwise it would confirm what a lot of us already know - closing Fishers Lane and TGT to cars has caused a lot of damage to businesses on and near the High Street. Why this just can't be admitted and then have these roads reopened permanently...

Given the information in another post about a split in the Labour ranks over the traffic measures, this may well prove to be a test of Hounslow's determination to carry on with their experiments. Now they actually know what happens when you play untested games with traffic flows I wouldn't be at all surprised if TGT stays open even after the Acton Lane work is over. Assuming of course that it ever is as this bit of road seems to be dug up constantly.

The report in the newsletter about how the council had dramatically reduced fines at TGT even before the Thames Water scheme could suggest they had already decided the road needed to be reopend before Thames Water had to dig up Acton Lane.

I don't think so. Hanif Khan didn't even know where Acton Lane was and the problems it was causing being closed. It was pressure from residents that made them open it and they've said they intend closing it again once the water works are finished. But given the results of the Have Your Say consultation show 98% of respondents want all roads open again they may just do what they are elected to do and serve the people...
