Claire, I have been there, my beloved red point siamese went missing for eight long days and nights. This site kept me sane. I took a week off work and first of all put posters up with his photo and contact details and where and when he went missing every hundred yards or so for half a mile around. When all I got were false sitings I expanded the area to a mile around. That worked. I got a call from a woman over half a mile away who had seen him looking thin on her garden shed roof and had given him milk. She had a cat, and I think he must have smelled the cat or its food and why he settled on her shed. That was one of the best days of my life. I followed the instructions in the following website to the letter, and although posters were what eventually worked, working through the rest of the stuff kept me sane when I was totally distraught:- www.catchat.org - look at the lost and found section. A couple of other people on here have PMd me to say that they got their cats back by following the advice on there. If you are not already, if you have a used litter tray, leave it in the garden. They can smell their own scent from a long way away if they have got lost.
