Kefir

Would anybody like some Kefir grains, mine have gone crazy and it seems a shame to throw them away.

What exactly is kifir - I've heard it's very good for you but do not know anything about it, how to use it or what it tastes like?  I believe it is fermented - causes other foods to ferment??  Thanks if either of you have the time to briefly explain.

Basically kefir is watered-down yoghurt or a fermented milk product.  Tastes like buttermilk.

It is a probiotic, really good for you and the grains are a much cheaper way of eating it regularly than buying pasteurised products.  It is very easy to make and the grains proliferate so its great for sharing.

What are these "grains"?  Wikipedia is no help, wittering on about "a specific type of mesophilic symbiotic culture".  I'm not sure I want to share some chemical that other people (not professional food producers) have prepared.  Do they have a natural origin?  If so, what and where?

I have raw, unpasturised milk and double cream from Hook & Sons from the Farmer's Market  Also masses of |Yeo plain organic yoghurt - do I need kefir on top of all that?

I have more grains to go if anyone would like them.  Not a chemical and no pressure on anyone to take some but I feel real health benefits and am happy to share.

I got some from you last time Clare. I have been using them a little differently....I get some apple juice from farmers market and decant some,put the grains in...and after few days there is a lovely and sparkling beverage! :)
