Several garage sites have been promoted for development for some time, as in the links below. The hope is they will be developed to provide affordable housing. Hounslow's current policy is for new developments to be car-free apart from an appropriate number of spaces allocated for use by people with disabilities. I was recently contacted by a resident about a block nearby. It is fully occupied - used for parking cars - and the question is where will the people who park their cars in those garages, park their cars when the garages have been demolished and replaced with housing? Yes, we are being encouraged not to use cars but given Chiswick's location - at the start of the M4, with easy access to the M25, M40, M3 and M1 - it is not surprising that so many residents chose to live here because of our good road links. Let's also remember that Chiswick's location has attracted huge car showrooms. Volvo, Citroen/Peugeot, Honda, Tesla, Porsche and a company making components for London's black taxis are all based in Turnham Green ward, the ward I represent. An Audi showroom is nearby, high up next to the elevated section of A4 leading to the M4. Encouraging even more car showrooms to relocate to Brentford's Golden Mile was an aim of our council, recognising the obvious links between the road infrastructure running through and to our borough and the people who live and work in it and the opportunities for economic development. No wonder current debates have become so heated.
