Highest ever Covid-19 daily infection rate

There have been 7,143 new cases of coronavirus recorded in the past 24 hours - the highest ever daily rise since the pandemic began.Are we all being careful enough ?

Chris Smith consultant virologist and a lecturer based at Cambridge University was on BBC Breakfast this morning and he said the recent data for infections needs to be taken in context. The huge increase in testing means there are more positive tests and he believed that the actually daily rate of infection now is 10,000 compared to 100,000 at the height of the pandemic back in April.

whichever way you may wish to look at the numbers one thing is certain, this virus is indiscriminate and it may kill you, you may survive with long term lung/breathing complications or you may just suffer for a few days. The point is there is still a great deal we do not understand about this virus.Three things are certain, infection rates, hospitalization and deaths are rising, that is not scaremongering MB.

On Monday the number was 4,044.  These numbers fluctuate from day to day - you will go mad if you react to each day's count (but did you react to the huge drop on Monday?).  A better measure is the 7 day average which smooths out the spikes.There is a deaths spike of 71 on the 29th but that follows lows of 17 and 13 for the previous 2 days which in turn fol.lowed a run 4 days in the high 30s.  A cynic might say that these figures are manipulated so that peaks occur when there is a significant political event - today Parliament discuss the Coronavirus powers legislation.

what i would say Andy, i really don't care about how many test have been done as we are hearing of people being asked to travel 100 miles for tests, NHS staff unable to get regular tests but the fact remains, people are dying and some who survive are experiencing other complications which should worry you.

There are 3 things that are important to look at.1. Avoid conflating infections with cases, they are not the same. Look at cases.2. Look at the figures for hospital admissions for Covid and overall3. Look at the weekly average death rates - Covid and overall. None of these data sets are without issue. And there’s data on inside and outside care see tings that provide a more detailed view. But taken together they provide a more accurate, balanced and holistic insight into what’s going on.

Yes James, but the media reporting is rather slanted is it not ?.Putting to one side emotion, risk and so forth and solely dealing with facts (and not appraising the potential explanations behind those facts) the media barely reported that on Sunday and Monday the daily new infections dropped significantly.  Yet yesterday when they went back up it was all over the headlines.It's no different (and as I say let's put everything else but reporting the facts to one side) to the media only reporting when your favourite team has won, but not when they've lost, and in my opinion that is when the allegiance/neutrality of the media doesn't stand up to scrutiny.

Some South American countries arereally being hit hard at the moment.Whereas in the UK the death rate along with new hospital admissions, even allowing for time lags so far and fingers crossed bears no relation at all to the supposed exponential growth in "cases" by which I assume are meant positive tests. In fact in most cases apart from the world figurevery little attention appears to be being paidto deaths, at all, any more. Only new cases.Whereas might it not be possible that in eachcountry or region in succession, an exponential peak in deaths* occurs only to tail off while apparent "new cases" continue to grow for whatever reason?michael adams* for deaths in all cases read deaths and new hospital admissions ...

They totally screwed up with their predictions re the economic crash, they toally screwed up with the environmental impact of Diesel and they are totally screwing up on all things Covid related.They get well paid to screw up and then appear on panels to discuss. It's an open cheque book for these people.

35.8 million reported identified cases of Covid-19 worldwide now. Only 25 million have been confirmed as 'recovered'!
