HiI am having some problems with both my front door and French window doors.I don't think the front door problem is serious but the other doors may be.Does anyone have any recommendations as to who might ne able to help with this. Many thanks

What are they made of ? Wood, plastic, aluminium or something else ?

Hi RichardBoth are made of wood

What problems are you having?

Sounds like you need a carpenter.
What about slight subsidence? Chiswick is mostly London clay and it shrinks somewhat after a long dry spell.

Hi KeithBoth are jammng. It's not subsidence. I need someone who knows what they are doing to check my surmise that for the front door it's temperature related and a hinge problem for the French Windows. If the hinges are at fault then I need someone to tell me whether the supports for the door are ok or need to be replaced.

Hi Vivienne It's not subsidence. There are no other signs of it.As Richard said, I probably need a carpenter but not every carpenter is ok with this sort of problem
John night hawk that I am - you could try asking companies that sell ready made wooden doors. There is/was one close to Brentford, was it called Howdens?? sure someone will know on this Forum. The door supplier may be able to give advice or point you in the direction of a door fitter. Back to my bed. Would a kitchen fitter be able to help? Mighty nite!

I may not be the doors themselves. It may be the sills.Door sills get a lot of wear and the paint worn off in places this letting in moisture/water. Wood expands when wet which can lead to door and sill binding.I have to paint my front door sill quite regularly as have had this problem in the past.

That's also what I was going to suggest. You can try to dry out the suspect area after removing the old paint as much as you can by using a fan heater if you have one and by leaving the door open for ventilation during dry weather and by applying some turps to the wood before repainting the sills if they are the problem.Good luck.

Greg Banel is yer man.. number on here numerous times. He does fencing as well and is possibly the hardest-working person I've ever employed

Can I just correct the statement that Chiswick is sitting on London Clay. Being near the river, it is usually silt/sand/ballast at the levels that houses are sitting on. It starts to get more clayey as you go north. Subsidence in Chiswick is more likely to be caused by leaking drains.
