I was listening to Radio 4 the other morning and this came up. They intervewed the author, a Cambridge don who's written a book on The Full Stop. Seriously.Anyhow, for want of anything better to ask I imagine, Martha Kearney raised the "passive/aggressive, upsetting the kids" claim. His reply was that whereas formerly kids didn't bother with full stops in SMS, they now do so in order to indicate that the exchange of messages is now at an end. And sometimes the recipient can be a bit miffed at this, but there you go.So in reality, rather than being "Snowflakery", this is really a case of "Academic writes dry tome on obcure subject and the media desperately try to make something newsworthy, even controversial, of it on a slow news day to fill an empty slot."Or "Peak DailyMailery", as it's better known.
