Turnham Green Terrace

Walking up and then down the Terrace with a trolley I became very aware that on the west side in particular, almost every shop has taken to placing an ‘A’ frame advertising their shop.  These are placed about a metre from their boundary and take up a good part of the pavement making social distancing impossible.The stupid arrangement of red and white barriers with green soil filled buckets in the middle of the space is not being used by pedestrians and therefore not fulfilling its purpose.  Mother’s with buggies and small children will not/ cannot use that space as the different levels between road and pavement and manoeuvring round the buckets is impossible.It’s not working and needs a rethink.  Perhaps moving the green buckets right next to the barriers would help but the whole set up is ugly and useless.As for Devonshire Road whoever thought that one up needs a lobotomy.  Unbelievably hideous.  Poor shop keepers.

Agreed. Turnham Green Terrace is a hideous eyesore, and the extra space created for pedestrians is simply not being used by them.

Walked down this morning and two green planters were completely sarounded with plastic fencing as they had been run over and bent with handles broken off. Plastic raod coning had been moved in many places and a few plastic food cartoons and one orange on the road LBH....The road looked a complete bomb site this morning Not very pleasing on the eye whatsoever. Infact this morning it looked pretty much a Shi*hole of a place and shop wners are trying to encourage people to shop.

A few painted footsteps or 'person' outlines on the reclaimed road might help get the message across in TGT and Devonshire. In Piccadilly they have a similar arrangement and they've added a few temporary Tarmac ramps to guide people on and off the pavement. But at TGT the biggest confusion must be the continuing stream of traffic which suggests that nothing has changed - which in practice it hasn't.  In some other streets in Westminster, to reinforce the road signs, they pull temporary barriers across each end for part of the day so shops and restaurants and people can safely spread into the road, and there's a hi-vis person at each end to make sure common sense prevails. Not difficult.

If we give J Vine and any other celebrity volunteers a hi-vis jacket each, they could stand at each end of TGT waving down non-compliant traffic and explaining the new arrangement - with news crews in attendance, of course. Meanwhile the rest of us could 'reclaim the street' by walking up and down the middle of the road, while our children play and wave to the friendly E3 bus drivers as they carefully edge their way through the jolly throng!

Unless E3 buses are able to jump barriers, Peter, I would suggest that would not really be suitable for TGT.

Whilst sitting outside FOUBERTS, enjoying an Ameretto Cornet. ..one notices on the roof of the terrace of buildings opposite...a rather concerning assortment of roofing that looks about to be dislodged.It's potentially dangerous to walk on that side of the road!

I have noticed that Jim, it has been like that for years.If you look around there are quite a few buildings like that.When I worked in Holland Park a lump of masonry crashed to the ground not six feet in front of me and that was in Royal Crescent!

I've made a response to the consultation exercise but expect no change.  There is a democratic deficit in LBH and they don't listen.

I've seen temporary painted markings drawing attention to changes and I've also seen metal ramps placed between pavement and extended pavement so that buggies and wheelchairs can cross - as well as spaces in the coning giving access for a pedestrian or buggy or wheelchair when crossing or disembarking a vehicle in the road.  I believe Extinction Rebellion has also helped out elsewhere to draw attention to changes.  In some countries around schools the parents in vis jackets man the temporary barriers closing off school streets at the beginning and end of the school day to keep cars out.

Is this the same parents that drive their children to school guess not .All that would do surely is push the 4x4's onto other roads because no one is going to stop the school run.They are putting a pint of water into a half pint glass.

As suggested, there are all kinds of simple practical improvements that could be made to these schemes to make them work better. What's depressing is that our local councils seem happy to rely on a few signs and some cameras, which isn't enough to make the schemes work safely.

All this chaos wreaked on local residents and businesses -  shutting roads that don't need shutting, forcing bike lanes where there's no room, and generally f-----g up entire neighbourhoods all so councils can get their mitts on the large sums of money that the idiot Rt Hon Grant Shapps Secretary of State for Transport dangled in front of them!  This was an ill advised and unintended consequence rushed through in a panic by the Government.  Is it too late for them to cancel the whole thing?  Plain wishful thinking!Of course, the Councils didn't have to be quite so zealous, not all were by any means but Hounslow (and Ealing too I gather) were only too delighted to stamp their power and might over their unsuspecting constituents in places requiring no major alterations.  The newly named South Chiswick, Grove Park to we locals, already was a safe and pleasant place - it won't be if these idiotic divisions and closures go ahead.  As for long suffering Chiswick Hi Rd, TGT and Devonshire Road - what on earth have they done to deserve such draconian actions?  All this on the back of helping us overcome the Covid pandemic!  What utter baloney.

When I went down Turnham Green Terrace today the road was rammed with South bound traffic tailing back from the traffic lights to the Bath Road.I passed again twenty minutes later and it was much the same.

I always tried to avoid going south on TGT during the rush hour unless I was trying to park there ... it was often really, really slow during rush hour. Mind you, back then you could use Fishers Lane which was my preferred route.

I see that many local authorities  and London  boroughs have ditched these crazy road closures due to public disapproval.

But as Hounslow and Ealing councillors are clearly forbidden to take any notice of public opinion, that is not going to happen here.  As many of us will not now access local services and shops, preferring to go to nearer areas (eg Acton, Barnes, depending where you live or ordering goods online) it is the local shopkeepers and traders who will - and already are, if you bother to speak to them - suffering and who will have to close down.  Chiswick may look like a suburb with a few coffee shops, a couple of estate agents and restaurants and charity shops in a few years if this continues. Why, then, would anyone want to live here or open a shop or other business here?
