What difference does a day make.

A LotPeople coming to the UK from France and the Netherlands must quarantine for 14 days from Saturday. Now there’s a stampede to get back before Saturday.Anyone that’s been in one of the infected areas should of been made to quarantine, from when the Government decided to put the measures in place. Not give them a few days to rush back with the virus.

BA > "Now there’s a stampede to get back before Saturday."Or Sunday if you listened to Grant Schapps. The sheer scale of the incompetence is staggering.

John Whitworth ● 2270d

The people who have traveled to these countries knew there was a chance They might have to quarantine when they get back, as the infections rise and fall all the time. It’s about time the British public wised up, and factored in a two week quarantine period before going abroad. If you can’t do it then you cannot go, it’s not rocket science.

Classic Cummings ploy to divert attention from the exams fiasco and these people have been caught up in the middle of what he seems to think is one big game.Do people really believe the situation is any worse in France than it is here?

John.LBC news this morning said the cut off was 4:00am Saturday with Eurotunnel charging around £350 for a one way ticket!

What angers me about this is that it's as though this country is covid-free - we are recording 800 new cases a day at the moment, up from 550 ish in early July.Whilst the number of new cases are on the rise in France, their death rate over the last 6 weeks has continued to decline and has never been above 20 per day (currently 8) whereas the UK is still considerably higher. So broadly speaking you're more likely to die from covid here than in France.  But here people are piling onto Bournemouth beach and so forth without impediment/restriction.It has to be all or nothing.  Lock us all down again until there's not a single new case of covid, like New Zealand has done and not managed to avoid a recurrence. It doesn't work and no country can carry on like that for any sustained period of time.Or let people try to get on with their lives, let the economy try to recover and accept that covid is going to be around, but take some optimism from the fact that even thought most European countries are showing a slight increase in cases (nothing like their initial surges earlier this year) the number of deaths is continuing to decline.I have no more or less time for people going to France than for people going to Bournemouth beach or piling in a restaurant to 'eat out to help out'.

"Do people really believe the situation is any worse in France than it is here?"Yes.  Just compare the Daily New Cases charts at Worldometer.https://www.worldometers.info/coronavirus/country/france/Scroll down to the Daily New Cases chart and click on 7-day moving average.  Then do the same for the UK athttps://www.worldometers.info/coronavirus/country/uk/New cases in the UK have been slowly rising; the 7-day moving average was 752 at end-July, now 809.France was 1056 at end-July, now 1962.  It looks out of control.

And the shysters at BA are charging £600 to fly from Paris.

You only have to look at the death rate in the UK to realise where the true danger lies.I hope Sturgeon will introduce quarantine In Scotland for Boris just in time for his holiday.

DH > "LBC news this morning said the cut off was 4:00am Saturday with Eurotunnel charging around £350 for a one way ticket!"4:00am Saturday is correct. But Schapps said on Sky News that people should get back before Sunday to avoid quarantine. He also tweeted: "It's Saturday at 4am, meaning that anyone returning on Sunday onwards will need to quarantine." That tweet has now been deleted.Anyway, I don't know why people are panicking: they could always travel back via a 'safe' country (like Stanley Johnson would) or simply disobey the quarantine requirement (like Cummings would).

RJ > "New cases in the UK have been slowly rising; the 7-day moving average was 752 at end-July, now 809."I'm afraid that's wrong. The world-beating daily cases data for August 13 is not yet available. As a result, the worldometer moving average value has been incorrectly deflated. The moving average up to August 12 is 945.

But what about death rates Richard ? - what are we to surmise from how most European countries are experiencing a rise in cases (but nothing like the rises they experienced in March) yet their death rates have been extremely low, and remain low, for weeks now ?.Slovakia for instance has gone from having a handful of new cases per day in June to currently averaging 39 a day.  Yet there's been 3 deaths there from covid in the last 2.5 months.France is 'out of control' yet for weeks now only 8 people per day are dying ?!.Isn't it complete scaremongering ?.Inevitably freedom of movement, be it within a country or internationally, increases the risk of any virus or disease spreading.  But isn't there encouragement to be taken from how virtually every European country is experiencing a slight increase in cases, yet their death rates are continue to decline ?.Or do we just all stay locked up at home until there's not a single new case of covid or until everyone has been vaccinated with god knows what ?.

"I hope Sturgeon will introduce quarantine In Scotland for Boris just in time for his holiday."Why exactly do you "hope" that Mr Glen?

Cllr Sam Hearn ● 2269d

I think you might have worked that out for yourselfWhile you're here let us know how you plan to support the young people in Hounslow who have been marked down in their A level because of an algorithm?

Stewart Jones ● 2269d

Precisely, Adam. No significant deaths or hospitalisations to speak of, so it’s cases now hence test, test, test to get some ‘covid’ related figures on the board; and there’s nothing wrong with most of these people because most people’s immune system protects against it, yet the government keeps buying £bs of vaccines. For some time now, there has been no pandemic, but when there is an agenda…

Stewart - are you confused about what thread you are on?

Stewart - are you confused about what thread you are on?

Cllr Sam Hearn ● 2269d

You're right John.  Thanks for the correction.

Richard Jennings ● 2269d

RJ > "You're right John."Thanks.I should have added that my correction does not really affect the substance of what you were pointing out in your earlier post - the recent increase in infections is considerably higher in France than in the UK.

John Whitworth ● 2269d

I hope Sturgeon introduces quarantine for Boris to protect the people of Scotland as his family and party wish to set rules for others but believe they are above the law

Robert Glen ● 2269d

Not confused at all. Unlike your response to the A level mess.
