Floor Sanding and Polishing

Hi,I Doubt that anyone remembers us but we are returning to Chiswick after six years in Saudi Arabia. We will arrive before our furniture so are looking to take the opportunity to do some things that are easier when the house is empty.One thing is to sand and polish the wood floor. Has anyone had any recent experience of having this done and can offer any recommendations?More specifically, can anyone give an approximate idea of cost and the time it takes? We are looking to do about 40 square metres.Thanks in advance

Hitt Oak on Gunnersbury Parade did a good job for us renovating and rejuvenating a wood block floor., though not cheap!

We can recommend Southern Cross in Kew.  www.southerncrossflooring.co.uk and 020 8404 1010.  They laid our floors for us about 6 years ago, including sanding and varnishing.  No idea of price for just sanding and polishing, but from memory it should take two, maybe three days.  One day to sand, probably just one day to varnish, but you may need two days to allow drying time between coats.  With 40 sq.m. you might be lucky and get it done in one day

Also happy with Southern cross. They just re-did a floor for us. I'd think it will take a couple of days as they need to leave a few hours between coats, though i guess it depends what finish you're putting on. They were a similar price to the other quote we got.

Dear Bob,Floor sanding is one of the easiest and satisfying DIY jobs I have ever done the secret is the quality of the sanding machines that you hire you require two one for the edges and one for the rest.  Diamond Hire in Brixton have the best machines that I know of and they cost about £100 for the weekend which is how long it took me to do our whole house in Barnes approx 110m sq.Once sanded the varnish, buy the best quality you can find and put on at least four coats - more in highly trafficked areas like kitchens and doorways - companies charge a fortune for this when it is easier to do it yourself.  You also need to buy a hammer and a blunt high tensile steel punch to tap all the nails of the original boards - not necessary for parquet this is probably the thing that takes the longest time and is most boring.If you would like I could pop round when you are ready to do the work and give you the benefit of my experience it was simple and really good to know that you always do a better job than those floor sanding cowboys.Be wellAlan WattsLong time chiswick w4 watcher do not usually post though
