Chiswick Flower Market

Delighted this is now a reality and I wish it every success.   It is z lovely idea.  Just one point, is it going to be a free for all or will it be masks and safe distancing?   Distancing not easy to achieve in a market situation although I believe the Chiswick Farmer's Market manages it rather well.

Don't get me wrong ,I tip my hat to the folk that have got this initiative going but....But we are told by the organisers that the existing Chiswick flower sellers welcome the new market.I, having been in a highly competitive business, have to wonder about that. Maybe I am missing something.

Well, I do hope it attracts people from far and wide like the Covent Garden flower market used to and as other flower markets do.  Will likely attract people who can easily get to the High Road either from Chiswick or outside and hopefully park and then enjoy the other High Road restaurants/bars/coffee shops and other retailers who survive.  Let's just hope Chiswick High Road doesn't become even more clogged than usual due to recent road closures, but it is guaranteed the Chiswick Roundabout will be far, far busier.  Hopefully not on Sundays but who knows?  Great article by local councillor on front page. As I don't want to take public transport, due to Covid, and live quite a way from the High Road, I won't be visiting in the near future, sadly, as I love flowers. I will just have to make do with those in my garden.

Apparently  the existing Chiswick florists have been given a big discount  of 50% on their stalls at the new flower market - is that true ?

That's interesting Loraine.Does that indicate that without the discount the bottom line would be less than favourable?I am not saying it would or would not but I am just raising the question on how the market will impact existing flower sellers in our area.Claire, your right of course, effective marketing to spread the word far and wide is key. Something you will know all about I am sure.

Point of order (on your point of order). But this implies existing businesses have been consulted first - is this a  widely known custom in Chiswick?

AdrianAs I said 'apparently' and it was from two of our well established  florists and I'm sure none of us would wish to see them suffer a downturn in trade, but would hope the Chiswick Flower Market  would increase their turnover, time will tell

As you say Loraine, time will tell but I am still left wondering why the existing businesses apparently welcome the new competition.I wish the new market well but I can't help thinking it is a very tough call to expect it be West London's Columbia Road.Let's hope I am wrong, it certainly wouldn't be the first time.

I wonder if in return they could give the public a discount of perhaps 20% less occupied pavement at the very front of Costa? Hard to social distance in this bottleneck.

How nice for you Julian. You must spend most of your day walking to the High Road and back if you are making on average 6 trips to the High Road a day. Each to their own.

I most likely am over a week period. I dont mind walking,ive even taken over my sons bikeI was just curious that for me it takes about 4 min to be in TGT abeit i do walk at a good pace,the point is its not far,just down the road infact. I understand if one has a medical issue and cant walk far.

Wondering if it will go ahead on 6th September in the light of an upturn in Covid-19 cases and Boris "squeezing the pedal" on events that will bring many strangers together ?Great shame if the opening is delayed again - does anyone know? But staying healthy has to be the priority
