So much for masks

I was really disappointed to see how many people were not wearing masks today. I walked passed the parade of shops on Thames Road this morning and just now and on both occasions lots of people coming and going from the shops but very few of them wearing masks. I know business must be difficult for retailers at the moment but what is the point if shopkeepers are not listening to the advice?

Clearly not the case based on the amount of people you sawm not wearing them, but some people are forgetting that certain people are exempt from wearing them.Plus, and as mentioned in another thread, some simply don't see the logic in dipping into a store for a few minutes versus a drink / meal out with no such requirement and a much longer stay...

Diane - I'm not blaming the shopkeepers but they should really be refusing entry to those customers not complying with the rules. Everyone needs to take responsibility. As for numbers, from what I could see, about half of people (mostly in their 20s and 30s) were not wearing masks.

Pippa, I think some are - probably rightly - scared and don't see why they should have to police this. A lot of people are kicking off about wearing masks. A bus driver who tried to insist people wore masks was killed recently.

Question for the mask enthusiasts.When can we stop wearing them?  Given that both the rates of new cases and deaths have tailed off in recent weeks, there is no current reason to wear them. The danger is that if there is an increase in the Autumn, there may be "mask fatigue" by then.  I am in favour of targeted interventions such as distancing, hygiene and possibly mask use where and when justified, but right now, given that mask use, even if beneficial has only marginal effect it seems we are using a tool that should be saved for a more urgent time.https://www.worldometers.info/coronavirus/country/uk/

Tescos Ealing yesterday. Masked queue supervisor fiddles with own mask then hands out masks to customers without mask before letting them in. Thus creating transmission route which did not exist before. This will be happening all over the country.

Wearing a mask is not a hardship and if it saves just one life then it is worth it, in reality it will save thousands of people form becoming infected. Jayne,People die from the common cold and influenza.  We have never considered wearing face masks to save just one life from these.  Whether or not a safe vaccine is developed for Coronavirus this and other viruses will continue to be with us.  You say "if it saves just one life then it is worth it" so you are implying that we must switch to wearing masks all the time for ever.  Can you please give some thought as to how this will affect our society?Consider:Our cultural life - sport, concerts, choirs Psychological health - what societal harms may arise from being unable to see people's facial expressions.The hard of hearing who rely on lip reading.Child development - do you ever smile at babies? I believe this is important for them. What is it like to be a baby in a world of the faceless?There are likely many other areas I've not thought of.As you are advocating permanent mask use for ever please address these issues and consider how our society and culture will look and feel in the future.And please see my earlier comment - I am not an anti mask absolutist.  If they can be shown to be effective they may be justified for limited periods in limited locations.

That's funny Andy because the Japanese seem to have got along OK wearing masks when they have a cold or flu and go out in public.For a long time I've thought it terrible that the Brits just cough, sneeze and spit all over the place and refuse to use handkerchiefs or tissues of any kind.  One reason why I prefer to drive or cycle than use the Petri dish that is London Transport.If that's the change we need then we need to do it.  Just as we did with HIV, which changed our behaviour and is still around - and so are we, well those of us that survived anyway!

Thanks Richard,I don't know how to do a 7 day average, but I did manage to make a bar chart for the London cases.  Since the peak of about 1000 cases per day at the beginning of April, it has been steadily decreasing to around 50 for the last month.  I don't see any sign of a recent step change so it is likely that variation is due to expected random fluctuations.

I agree - I too avoid London Transport at peak time and always have.  When I were a nipper there were public health campaigns for this "Coughs and sneezes spread diseases" encouraging the use of handkerchiefs (I don't think we used tissues much then).  Some of these are available on YouTube - just search for the slogan.You say "the Japanese seem to have got along OK wearing masks when they have a cold or flu and go out in public" - again I agree with this.  This key point being "when they have a cold or flu".  I believe that also, in the current pandemic distancing and mask use are advisory not compulsory.Of course, by driving you are contributing to pollution caused illnesses and deaths.  Risk is a complex business isn't it.

If you do a chart including the whole descent from 1000 cases per day, it's difficult to see what's happening down at the 50/day level. This is my current chart from 11 May onwards.  It's not a step change but a worrying rising trend in the last two weeks.

Unfortunately the young seem to think that they are invincible in that fewer of them appear to succumb to the virus (or notice having it).  It is something about being young and having less experience of life.  It would be good if they were to hear more about other youngsters whose lives have been changed by having this - so they can think.  They do exist.

Previous comments about wearing masks when suffering from colds or flu make no sense to me.  I have had flu twice in my life and believe me you cannot go out so no need for a mask and when I have a cold I usually have a constantly running nose which needs constant attention and therefore impossible to wear a mask.I wore a mask for the first time yesterday and couldn't get if off fast enough for all the reasons previously mentioned.  I found it hard to breath, very hot, glasses steamed up and I wanted to blow my nose!  I was constantly trying to rearrange it because it was uncomfortable thereby negating any potential benefits and possibly increasing the chances of infection to myself.  I believe this particular instruction is purely this pathetic government trying to look as though they are doing something -  4 months after lockdown.  As someone said above, when can we expect to stop wearing these things?  This virus is not going away any time soon so are we to stay locked up and face covered for the rest of our lives and where is the logic that the public must wear masks in shops but the shop workers do NOT have to wear them?From the start of this pandemic the advice was that masks were useless except for the real medical masks used by the NHS which we are not supposed to use as they are required by the NHS.  Now any old thing will do e.g. a scarf wrapped round your face.  This advice flies in the face of previous advice about the dangers of misuse of masks when wearing and removing same.  Your "mask" could potentially be covered in virus which you then touch on removal and touch your face etc., etc., Does this really make sense to any of you that are so keen on mask wearing?

Hi Micki - that's a really strange comment when the thread is about masks, not numbers of people. For the record, when I passed the shops on Friday morning there were about a dozen people waiting in the street with at least two people in the convenience store. I'd say about a third of people had masks on. When I walked passed in the afternoon there were at least half a dozen people outside the shops and not one was wearing a mask. And when I passed yesterday it was similar, except this time I saw one guy taking supplies into the convenience store and he wasn't wearing a mask and one girl serving in the coffee shop not wearing a mask.

I think it’s something to do with being British. We just don’t like being told what to do as we know better than anyone else.I have observed Japan and other similar countries wearing mask for the heavy polluted air they have to breathe. The air in the uk until the pandemic  was becoming badly polluted, if it had risen to Japans levels, would we wear masks? No is the answer to that question.I have tried various types of masks, some have been very uncomfortable to wear for long periods, but the very expensive fff3 or N 95 masks are quiet comfortable to wear as they have more room for the front of your face.Carpenters have to wear the fff3 masks when cutting MDF board as the dust from MDF can add to health problems.If Covid- 19 were a air born virus, giving you a much greater chance of catching it, I would have been wearing one all day while outside and would expect shop staff to be wearing a mask as well, although quite a few are.Mask wearing is about respect for others when you cannot social distance from one an other. Weather true or not, I read an article last night, the young people are attending large gatherings without wearIng masks, so if they catch the virus they are taking it home to their families.By no means, masks are not 100% protection, but combined with all the other measures we already use, it has to go some way to reducing passing on the virus.

Totally agree Bernard, covid is not flu or cold it’s a new virus what causes death. I agree many older folk and those with underlying health issues can die if they get flu but it’s not the flu that kills them. Many people over 80 who have died having tested positive with covid would have died if they had flu. It’s the scale of deaths from covid which makes it a serious health pandemic. Wearing a face mask, social distancing and good hand hygiene will help to reduce the number of cases and therefore potential deaths, I haven’t read one good reason not to wear a face mask, we will get used to it.

Andy you seem to be missing the point.......so no audience participation for sport, concerts etc. That won’t harm us, smiling at  babies we don’t need to wear masks at home, hard of hearing will cope. This virus kills so until such time they find better treatments and/or a vaccine we all need to make adjustments to our daily lives surely not too much to ask to protect each other. It is totally up to us as individuals as to how much we can minimise the risk to others.

It's the young who aren't socially distancing who can by asymptomatic or presymptomatic.  Waiting until you have the symptoms which you may never suffer from to distance or self-isolate is pointless.  Anyone who is constantly exposed to the virus seems to be more at risk.The young can and do get it as well.  Forget not worrying unless you have some underlying problem.  Who knows what they may have that they don't know about.  There aren't enough of the right sort of tests available.

Jayne,With respect I think you have missed my point.  I said that cold and influenza kill too, you said these restrictions are worthwhile if one life is saved, I deduced that you therefore hold that facemasks should be worn at all times for ever.  In what way are you qualified to speak for those who partake in our sporting and cultural life? Are you qualified to speak for the deaf?  Are you willing to take the risk of widespread psychological problems in children who don't have the necessary social interactions for healthy development?As I have said I'm not an absolutist anti masker, there are times and places where it may be justified - e.g. in March and April when infection rates were increasing.  I've pointed out some of the possible harms - I've no doubt there are many more.  You need to make an extremely strong case for the benefits of mask wearing to justify it.  Saving one life is not adequate in my view.

What better idea do you (or any) have?The negatives you cited earlier imply wearing a mask at all times rather than the guidance of use when in close proximity to others indoors. Besides, they are by and large minor issues (baby development for heavens sake, talk about clutching at straws).Surely there are only a couple of major issues - first that a mask becomes "sodden" with the virus and second that it is not at all effective and does not diminish the spread.In the first issue, for a mask to become laden with moisture containing the virus it must actually be quite effective at trapping the virus. And its your own breath and own affected moisture. So you've already got the virus but by wearing a mask you are reducing the spread. (This is based on masks being more about reducing the spread from infected people rather than masks reducing the risk of the wearer getting the virus. Which is likely the basis of the guidance to wear masks when in close proximity to others. Its not about you, its about everyone else.) And it means having more than one mask, and washing used masks regularly (or disposing of disposable ones).And the second case seems unlikely as masks were a key component of the PPE that was in such short supply. If masks do not work, then why is critical PPE? Either they are key PPE and work, or all these expensive purchases for the NHS has been a huge waste.Of course this also assumes you wear proper masks and wear them properly. So I am keen to wear a mask as I would not like to infect others, if I am infected. And I am keen that others wear a mask as I do not want to be infected. I can live with the very minor inconvenience of wearing a mask for the short time I am in confined spaces with other people. It is such a selfish pity that some others do not feel able to do the same.

I think you have answered your own question.  The NHS masks are the only masks which are considered effective but the public are not supposed to have access to these. They are supposed to be purely for the use of health workers.  The majority of masks being worn by the general public are nothing more than window dressing and potentially dangerous at that. How many people do you see wearing masks as "chin straps" or with their noses protruding over the top.

A fair point that many, but doubtless not all, masks available are of a lower standard than full spec NHS PPE masks. That means many masks being used are less effective. However I'm unclear how that makes them dangerous, just not as effective.Not wearing a mask properly is dumb and dangerous, even if its proper PPE spec mask. That is obvious.

Not sure if you ever been to Japan, but masks were in fasion before this all started, and since then everyone wears them, but tramsission rates are still going up there, which leads me to believe they don't really work anyway, and Tokyo is way cleaner than London overall.

Japan looks like it's starting a 'second wave' if newly reported cases are anything to go by. The shape of the graph makes it seem unlikely (to me anyway) that the increase in newly reported is just down to increased testing.I don't know to what degree testing has ramped up in the UK, but I assume it probably has (it seems much easier to get a test now, several of my colleagues booked tests at the weekend and have already had their (negative) results back. I can see that after the initial delays and confusion with tests, the UK has now got one of the highest number of tests undertaken per head (of countries with populations of more than 1 million), and has performed the 5th most tests of any country(regardless of population).Like Andy suggested, perhaps the increase in infections that Richard showed on his graph is down to wider testing, we'll know within a week or 10 days. Hopefully, the numbers will stay roughly where they are now (or decrease).

ONS figures show that weekly deaths from all causes across England and Wales are BELOW the prior 5 year corresponding weekly average for the fifth consecutive week, yet draconian restrictions still apply and face masks have only just been made compulsory in shops. So what does this tell us? It tells us that restrictions have nothing to do with public health and that the government wants restrictions imposed on the population for other reasons. With so few covid hospitalisations and death certificate ‘mentions’ to point towards, the government now has to rely on ‘cases’, ‘spikes’ and ‘infections’, even if these are abroad, to ‘justify’ the restrictions; and these claims, which are made as a result of phoney testing, mean nothing – we are all full of coronaviruses, and always have been, and the immune system of the vast majority of people has coped perfectly well with the virus. A couple of weeks ago, Johnson said that restrictions may be able to be lifted by Xmas. More recently, he said that we should be over this by the middle of next year. Clearly, an end to the infringement of human rights and freedoms, and the destruction of lives and businesses, is not planned, and the government will continue to destroy humanity in every way it can under the guise of protecting against a virus, as are other governments around the world who are controlled by the same satanic cult. Total control is the plan and China is the model; and the government is clearly planning a miserable winter for us all to further Orwellian rule by the Spring. To make matters worse, the government is intent on a (unnecessary) vaccination programme and, once started, there will be no end; and DNA-tampering vaccines have got them drooling at the mouth.  Mandatory masks are here to stay, eventually becoming mandatory everywhere, with a standardised version eventually being imposed for slave acknowledgement purposes. All achieved by the cabal’s most powerful tool – the mainstream media, assisted by shills at various levels, and are active on this forum.

A virus study in Tokyo a couple of years ago followed a number  schools where half the students were asked to wear masks.  14.8%  of those who didn’t wear  masks contracted colds or flu compared to 2% of those who wore masks.There may be disadvantages to wearing masks and the benefits may be questionnable at times.  However, in my book the old adage ‘coughs and sneezes spread diseases’  still holds good.  The above figures are proof enough for me. Equally,  it appears more and more young people are now presenting with the virus, mainly asymptomatically.  It is also proven there are more young people than ever now with hay fever and allergies. So if they go around coughing and sneezing they will be super spreaders. I know a lot of young people are being super careful but a small drive pointing out the facts and encouraging mask wearing  could go a long way towards stemming the virus.

Good points Alina.  Do surgeons and medical staff complain about having to wear masks and protective clothing when operating, often in uncomfortable temperatures?  I suspect they do but they have no choice and get on with it Masks are not comfortable,  they are necessary,  we will get used to them. I suspect Iying in a hospital bed struggling to breath would be far more uncomfortable.

I’ve stated this before. Wearing a mask is for others, not you. The mask is poor at protecting the wearer from getting a virus. It has some effect but it is not effective. So why wear a mask? Well, it is relatively effective at inhibiting the spread of a virus if you, the mask wearer, are infectious. Wearing a mask is an act of being decent. You might be a carrier even if you have no symptoms. You might transmit the virus even though you feel fine. Why risk it?Selfish knobs do not wear masks. Decent people do. End of.

I know, its incredible, huh? This virus does not transmit in the normal way. It transmits via air borne particles of moisture from breath (and yes coughs or sneezes, but mostly just exhaling moist air). This is unique and therefore clearly super suspicious.All other viruses transmit the normal virus way - by Uber or by posting themselves to the next recipient. I think it’s about managing the general level of risk. If you increase the risk of Covid starting to spread again by opening bars and restaurants, it makes sense to reduce risk of spread elsewhere by wearing face coverings.

When did they change their guidance? I recall it was in June. So you will be delighted with these excerpts from their April guidance document:"Current information suggests that the two main routes of transmission of the COVID-19 virus are respiratory droplets and contact. Respiratory droplets are generated when an infected person coughs or sneezes. Any person who is in close contact (within 1 m) with someone who has respiratory symptoms (coughing, sneezing) is at risk of being exposed to potentially infective respiratory droplets. Droplets may also land on surfaces where the virus could remain viable; thus, the immediate environment of an infected individual can serve as a source of transmission (contact transmission)."So they are very clear - this virus most often spreads via air borne moisture from people with the illness (showing symptoms or not).The guidance clarifies:"Wearing a medical mask is one of the prevention measures that can limit the spread of certain respiratory viral diseases, including COVID-19. However, the use of a mask alone is insufficient to provide an adequate level of protection, and other measures should also be adopted."So there are two key points here (1) masks are key to preventing spread of the virus but they need to be medical standard masks; (2) other actions need to continue to be taken. But the main thing is back early in the year (before lobbying blah blah) WHO were clear that masks inhibit the spread of the virus.What were you saying again?

Sounds like you are suggesting that the fact that someone took some images that were then put out via Reuters (an international news agency that has many offices around the world and a very large presence in London) adds weight to the ‘Westminster Bridge Dummies’ conspiracy theory. So, if I remember correctly, you are saying that the people who fell from the bridge on that day weren’t real people but were in fact dummies. Is that about the size of it? Was the whole thing ‘staged’ as well?

Thanks. Your use of capital letters made your argument so much more clear. But remind me, what is your “case closed “ argument? Because it does seem that WHO recommended masks early in the pandemic outbreak. And they were clear that air borne infected moisture was and is the primary mechanism for conveying this virus. And reducing the spread of said moisture can be achieved by appropriate mouth and nose coverings. Wait. You have new insight. Does this come from an Icke?
