Sterling Rd recycling site.

Anyone have up-to-date feedback on queues, mid week? Thanks in advance.

Got stuck in the queue while trying to get to M & S this morning at just after 8am.  Not helped ny the fact that a lorry had parked in the what should have been left hand lane, blocking the cars which weren't queuing to get into the site which, by this tine nearly stretched back to the lights.But by the time I left M & S at around 9am the queue had Disappeared completely.

Wednesdays and Thursdays are much better than Mondays and Tuesdays (when neighbouring sites are closed).The gates are closed by 3.30 and I'd advise not turning up after 2.30 (though I've just made it when arriving nearer 3 pm)Oh and there are loads of Council Staff in hi-viz jackets "directing" traffic who for want of something better to do, take great care to tell you that "the queues are at least 45 minutes, mate, you'll never make it". I've had this 3 times (moving house) and I've got in every time.Btw, you can't park up outside and deliver your rubbish on foot.

Plus the queue is often held back to allow for deliveries to adjacent building sites and businesses, but you get there in the end.

Went on Wednesday, it did not look like there were too many cars there, but still queued for over an hour.It amazes me how much rubbish people can get into a small car, some looked like that they had completely demolished a house.

I find this very frightening. How long before landfills are full to capacity?? Then what??

Juliet, Most of the stuff deposited at this site is "recycled" into other usable materials and does not go automatically to landfill.

I'd like to see more evidence of that.  There has always been a great love of the crusher and despite its name as a Reuse & Recycling site there have been rather crest fallen people told to put items of furniture into the crusher when all they needed was a bit of TLC.  Many more people will now have the time to do some of that.The British Heart Foundation shop was obviously doing so well before the lockdown that it could be fussy (space is always a problem for charity shops) and people also do need to be able to go and browse and to buy to keep businesses going. Petit Miracles in Shepherds Bush were running courses teaching people how to mend and upcycle items before the lockdown.  They had a showroom in the Hammersmith Shopping Centre.  James Petri mentioned another similar outfit in the East of London. Clothes needing TLC unless they are special are not that likely to get that TLC at a charity shop either and nobody will love your old clothes as much as you so mending them will give them a longer life before they are sent for rags or incineration.  Remember that charity shops exist to make money for the charity and not to clothe their customers.https://www.loveyourclothes.org.uk/

We are throwing away far too much.We need to start with Refusing all the unnecessary packaging and free gifts....
