Another Scam

8.30am this morning, husband gets a call on his mobile says it is from HMRC.  He must press button 1 failure to do so will mean the Police will be notified and he will be arrested.  We are awaiting the knock at the door.Apart from our amusement, this is an outrageous attempt to entrap and intimidate and those made of less stern stuff could so easily be taken in.

I had the first scam call I've had since lockdown began the other day. 5sec delay on the line, a lovely lady with a heavy Indian accent who introduced herself as Elizabeth from a company who wanted to consolidate my debts. She seemed quite put out when I told her this was the first scam call I had received in a while. "Why do you think this is a scam call?" she asked ...

Did they offer to depost 20 million dollars into your account on behalf of some rather important king somewhere who has passed away recently?

Had the Amazon scam, saying my Prime membership was up for renewal £79.38.  Press 1 to cancel, pressed 1 and had someone ask me if I had a laptop or smart phone, luckily I was disconnected,  I told my wife who pointed out my near error , p.s. I do not have an Amazon Prime account !

Apparently I keep having accidents which the lovely caller can help me with. Funny thing is I don't remember any of them.

Perhaps it was a head injury, Colin?

You could be right, Susan. Next time I'll try to remember to have all my bank details ready.:)

The last 'accident call' I had I asked if they meant the one with the coach which was still subject to the police investigation or the one involving the minibus taking the nuns to Walsingham.  I think the noise from the other end was their phone breaking the sound barrier as it went down!

Just had an email supposedly from HMRC.  It tells me that they have been trying to credit my bank £695.63 an over charge on my tax.  Amazingly they were unable to access my bank  details etc would I forward my credit card number to them asap.  I forwarded the entire email to phishing@HMRC.gsi.gov.uk and then deleted the scam email.

I’ve had 2 of these scam calls in the past couple of weeks, my husband has been called too. A quick google informed me that it is a known scam and happily neither of us have been arrested!!  But more seriously I can see it could be very frightening for some people..
