Polite Behaviour in Grove Park Please

I am really happy to support my local shops, but find it really rude when the shop assistants are speaking in Pakistan language when I am the only female in the shop. It makes me feel really uncomfortable so I won't be using this shop again. This is my community, I don't experience the same at the Strand on the Green shop.

Many people from Pakistan or other places all over the world tend to speak to each other in own language where possible and why not. "It makes me feel really uncomfortable" That sounds like your referring to something in particular. I perdict it will get over 100 responces in 48hrs

I have supported this local shop for 16 years. Because of social distancing only 2 people are allowed in the shop at any one time. I was the only person in the shop, so when I said I felt uncomfortable, I was being polite. 🌻

But Debra,its your local shop that you have used for 16 years. Have you allways checked to see that seomeone else is in the shop before entering.So on that alone i dont get it. I think you may have donne worng in posting it here unless you dont read the nextfollowing comments. Stay well and stay safe

Hi DebraWhat was it about this particular visit that made you feel so uncomfortable?The owners and staff of my local convenience store often speak in their native language and it doesn’t bother me in the slightest.

I am furious with this post- how can you think that anyone who speaks any language can be a threat- people are here to help the community and I am disgusted with this post- you don’t realise how we need any one who are here for us..

Firstly, how did you know it was Pakistan “language” they were speaking? I know they speak Kashmiri, Hindko, Brahui, Shina, Balti, Khowar, Dhatki, Haryanvi, Marwari, Wakhi and Burushaski to name a few, so which one were they speaking. I know the shops in Grove Park very well and have to say every single one of them are always polite so much so that they even kept a bag of flour aside for me a few weeks back. This is also my community and it makes me feel uncomfortable when people like you come out with such a stupid post.

There have been many posts on this site that I have thought are out of order but this one is the worst.  It is racist, insulting and discourteous.  But what shocks me the most is someone has such a high opinion of themselves not only do they think people should only speak in English when this person is within earshot but they think it perfectly acceptable to make a public comment as though it is an offence.  No idea how far up your a*hole your head is but suggest you remove it quickly, take a deep breath and apologise!

Debra - get a skin!  You're being idiotic and very un-neccessary!  All our local shookeepers and their staff are unerringly polite.  I bet you don't burst into Spanish everytime you are in a public place on the Costa del Sol!Did you think these poor souls in Grove Park were planning dark and dangerous deeds to inflict on your person????

Decades ago, in the early 70's I was an Au Pair in Sweden and learnt enough Swedish to shop and hold a reasonable conversation. In the early 80's I had a Persian boyfriend, when we were with his family and friends they all chatted in Farsi even though they all spoke very good English, so as not to be left out of the conversations I learnt Farsi which is a beautiful sort of sing-song language. My wonderful cleaner, of over 10 years, Dorota, is Polish and over this time we've taught each other our native languages, although her English is vastly better than my Polish. Debra, there's a big hint for you in my post no need to feel 'uncomfortable' just ask the shopkeeper that you've used for years their language equivalent of Good morning, Hello, Thank you etc... it will stand you in good stead and benefit you going forward 🤞

Oddly, her only previous posts suggest that she belongs to a gardening club in Acton, based way over in Bromyard Avenue, half way to the Bush, which suggests that she doesn't live in Grove Park at all.

Is this thread developing into a bit of a witch-hunt! I found the initial post pretty strange and can understand those who find it offensive, but not sure we need to track where the lady lives or if she even exists. Maybe time to let this unpleasant thread fade away?

I suspect that there is quite a lot of use of fictitious accounts to troll the innocent locals on this forum and I think it is good for people to be aware of that and DFTT.

Unfortunately they do, Pippa. I have had posts put on here in my name that I didn't post, and I know several other people who have had that as well.  If you complain the moderators will take the posts down and if they can find out who put the post up in a false name, that person will be banned. And there have been posts with ludicrous not just double but barrelled x 5 that actually manage to stay up for a day or two before the moderators take them down.

I liked Loraine's response to the OP's plight.Pursuing Susan's gardening hints... one is led to Spencer Road.  No false OP name seemingly.The fabric of Pakistan is worthy of study.
