By all accounts that I have found he did indeed live in Chiswick. And as far as I can tell he is a new listing in this thread. I "found" him because he was on Talking Pictures (programme 82) only yesterday in "The Girl on the Pier" from 1953. He was only 14 but was already a very competent actor. He also acted in Performance which included Mick Jagger.  It was voted the 48th greatest British film of the 20th century by the British Film Institute.

I was listening to Great Lives on R4 today and they talked of a singing teacher called Amanda Ira Aldridge, daughter of Ira Aldridge she lived in Chiswick not sure where though. Fascinating story though

Not really a "resident", but when appearing on stage in London in 1945, Eric Morecambe (but not Ernie Wise) lodged in digs belonging to Mrs. Nell Dewar (Dewer?) at 13 Clifton Gardens.I wonder whether she was a theatrical landlady, in which case there might have been others?P.S. Yes it was 2 Blandford Road, Flat 1 where they lived for 40 years.Frank needed somewhere to live  in London and he asked Geoffrey if he could stay for a couple of weeks whilst he was looking for somewhere but it worked well for both of them so he stayed on although they definitely weren’t “an item”!

Yes indeed. Sir Patrick lived by the river in Chiswick and supported Erin Pizzy’s Women’s Refuge  in CHR. Now nationwide and called Refuge which he still supports.He also lived in Bedford Park for a while.Still very active.

Lived at 3 Bath Road for many years and I knew him very well. The son of Percy Angelo Staynes, artist and designer of interiors for Canadian Pacific Liners and more.Anthony was academically brilliant and won a scholarship to Westminster School where he was placed 2 years ahead of his age.He then went to Cambridge to study English Literature and was so far ahead that he was invited to choose an additional subject. So he chose French Literature.His father wanted him to be a Judge but Anthony was adamant that he was going to be an artist.He then went to Paris and lead La Vie de Boheme.When his father died he returned and moved into his studio at 3 Bath Road where he both lived and painted.When his mother died he rented out rooms in the house as a means of income.The original Art School opposite was almost completely destroyed when a V1 bomb exploded at 8.32 one morning.It the 60’s it was rebuilt and became Chiswick Polytechnic.At that time Chiswick was in Middlesex County Council which was disbanded in 1965 and it became Hounslow Borough Council.The council then decided to sell the site to developers for housing but Anthony found an MCC clause which stated that the building must be retained for educational purposes.So then there was a long pause before the ArtsEd acquired it and turned it into a world class school for the performing Arts.Anthony’s sister Jill Staynes wrote crime novels together with her friend Margaret Storey and they moved to Wimbledon but Anthony stayed in Bath Road until he died.He was also a conservationist and allowed self set trees, thistles, teasels etc to thrive in the garden. The sycamores and ash trees are now very large and wonderful with the garden being carefully maintained.Some of his hundreds of paintings can be seen on mutualart.com

Lived at 5 Priory Gardens for many years until 1993.He was a permanent feature of the London Art World.He was director of the Whitechapel Gallery and he staged the first retrospective of David Hockney’s work.He married Wanda Osinska, a very colourful and outspoken Polish lady who entertained us all with her views on Mark’s work.For his 40th birthday he invited all the neighbours round for a big party with the music turned up and lots of vodka.David Hockney was there enjoying himself enormously with Wanda floating around in an amazing gown.Eventually we all tottered back home and suffered from huge headaches the following day!Mark never ceased to entertain us and we were very sad when he had to sell his house due to bankruptcy when Wanda left him and took their daughter Lucy with her.A very notable former resident.

Co-incidentally on a repeat of a Morse episode yesterday evening, 'Masonic Mysteries', on ITV 3 at 17.50, much of the outside scenes were of the external and internal parts of Chiswick Town Hall and the last scene had Morse parked outside the Hall with a clear view of Turnham Green Church in the background. B this wasfilmedin 1900 I believe.  A few years later(10 to 15) a chap called Dennis Firminger set up a company occupying an office in CTH, which found locations for film companies.  Dennis Firminger appeared on a number of credits of Morse as the 'Location Finder'.  At one time I think this location finding function was part of Hounslow Council.

33 Marlborough Crescent.Now well known worldwide for his music.He and his French wife Noelle were good friends of mine.She was the adopted daughter of Sir Roger Ormrod QC who set up the Notting Hill Housing Trust and we collected up a lot of donations for storing in his garage near Holland Park.The first charity shop opened in Notting Hill and the second one in Turnham Green Terrace.Noelle had two bull terriers “ My Staffies” who used to drag us along all over the place. Great fun!After her parents died John and Noelle decided to move to France but she sadly died there and John is now living in Spain.He has written 25 books which are available in Warterstones and Amazon.

The kindly old soul General Pinochet of Chile, one of whose greatest fans was ex-Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, lived secretly in the cellars of the Duke Of York public house (now, sadly, closed) on Devonshire Raod (now all but closed) after he went on the run after the Labour Government had issuued a warrant for his arrest while he was in London for medical treatment, thus overriding his diplomatic immunity.The General  was a stout defender of human and democratic rights, and had nothing to do wwith the murder of 2,279 of his countrymen; and nor did he torture a further 27,255 of them, as has been claimed by many otherwise highly respected international human rights organisations.Mrs Thatcher was appalled at Labour's treatment of  the saintly old boy, and she was often seen visiting after hours, while we were still in there for a quiet "lock-in", with a bottle of his favourite Scotch whisky.(Rima: I hope this contribution helps you get to 100,000 distinguished one-time Chiswick citizens. I may, however, have got a few of my facts wrong).

Rima dear,The question is, did Frank ever live in Chiswick?  Because if having a few in the Tabard's the new qualification I'd add plenty to your list..Anyway, here's one you haven't got, one of my closest mates Kenneth MacDonald who did drink often in the Tab – and lived for a few years in Oxford Road North before moving to Brentford, then Hampton Court.  Ken was Mike behind the bar in Only Fools.  Before that Nobby in It Aint Half Hot Mum. And a wonderful stage and radio actor too.  Me, Ken, B Glover (Barnes), Phil Jackson (Inspector Japp/Ealing), Albie Welling, Seedie etc used to regularly meet up in the Tab before heading off to Fisher's Snooker Club in Acton to fight for the World Snooker Title and the Connie Francis Cup.  The latter two both living in Chiswick.Ken and me shared a certain dark sense of humour and virtually a birthday.  We both lost our dads very young to a massive heart attack.  Which is what happened to Ken – in Hawaii with his wife and two kids – aged 50.

James Fittler ARA 1758-1835. Died in Turnham Green and buried in Saint Nicolas graveyard. He was a well known engraver for prints of portraits and country seats and much else besides. Aged 19 he was enrolled as a student of the Royal Academy and elected as associate in 1800. He was appointed by George 111 to be his Marine Engraver and produced grand work with titles such as Triumph of Britannia, Defeat of the Dutch Fleet, The Glorious Victory Obtained over the French Fleet by the British Fleet; fair brings a tear to the eye. Works of his are in the RA Collection, National Portrait Gallery, British Museum, V&A, Royal Society, the Royal Collection, the science museum and are frequently, perhaps always, on sale in many galleries and auction sales. The Yews, 1Woodstock RoadProlific inventor, consulting engineer, research physicist, scientific  populariser.He invented an ingenious device for lighting the acetylene lamps of a car without leaving the driving seat and shortly before WW1, he patented an all electric razor although no-one would finance it.He joined the Royal Flying Corps when war broke out and was put in command of experimental works. By 1916 he had devised and built a radio ( or gyro ) - controlled aircraft , undoubtably the first in the world.The final trial of this Aerial Target was on 21 March 1917 when it was demonstrated to an audience of generals and diplomats from the allied countries. All went well initially but then it crash-dived towards the VIPs who all ran for cover.He was President of the Institute of Engineering Technology and President of the Institute of Patenters.His book “It’s bound to happen” predicted electronically heated clothing and flying to the moon.He invented at least 200 machines and gadgets and patented some 60 of them, including new explosives, gas detectors for coal mines, cigarettes that did not drop ash, a grass cutter using old razor blades and a stocking suspender that prevented laddering. 46 Esmond RoadIn 1939 he fought with the 1st Tank Regiment of the Polish army against the invading Germans. He escaped through Czechoslovakia, Hungary, Yugoslavia and Italy ending up in Scotland with the Polish Forces. In 1944 he was severely wounded in the battle of the Falaise Gap, losing all mobility in his legs for some months. Against all odds he recovered to rejoin  the 1st Armoured Regiment, 1st Polish Armoured Division in time to liberate Breda in Holland, where he met his future wife Marlies, mother of his two children. He was awarded the Virtuti Militari, the highest gallantry medal of the Polish  forces.After the war he resumed his career as a lawyer. He was a member of the Royal British Legion and a conspicuous presence at Rememberance Day services, in the dress uniform he had made for him in Princes Street, Edinburgh in 1942 which still fitted him half a century later. His highly buffed Sam Browne belt and distinctive cap, his full decorations and ceremonial sword, for the wearing of which he had full permission and his ramrod upright stance brought colour and glamour to annual services at Chiswick’s War Memorial.He was a strong supporter of the Polish National Treasury from its creation in 1949 and on its 30th anniversary was awarded its Golden Medal.He was a Knight of the Cross of the Officers Order of Polonia Restituta and was awarded the Cross of Merit for Bravery.

Chris also completely transformed TGT Mews from a really nasty and dodgy place to be into a very smart place. Demolished all the crumbling wooden shacks and replaced with smart offices and flats. Whatever, I think we should be able to include Livia Giuggioli and her brother Nicola, founders of Eco Age. They started with their shop in CHR and then moved on to offices up the road for selling online and still going strong.I haven’t seen either of them for a long time but they were very supportive of all our local independent shops and Livia always looked so glamorous and vivacious. We always said that she would look wonderful even if she was wearing a paper bag and flip flops.

I have aimed to include everyone, and cat, and have erred on the side of inclusion rather than exclusion. If a proposer has said the whole family were notable I have included all of them but just being a visitor, like Lucy Middleton, I have excluded. For people with 2 names I have put both names on same line. If there is any doubt about qualification I have put a question mark. Born at Strand on the Green.2 Priory Gardens and the Studio at 1Bath Road 1992-2007Third generation of architects from his grandfather W Curtis Brown and designers of many notable buildings in London.His wife Jane is an artist and they had four children. Graham was a talented footballer from an early age..playing for Old Meadonians locally and subsequently at several professional clubs including Brentford, Gillingham and Brighton and Hove Albion. He played for Brighton in the FA Cup Final in 1983 against Manchester United no less. He once lived on St Thomas' Road... the dsite of Chiswick's former famous sports ground.Played in an FA CUP FINAL? That's notable!

Rima, to help you in your quest to achieve this forum's longest ever thread I would add the name of Dan Luger.Born and raised in Chiswick and of Czeh/Croation descent, he attended Latymer school upper where he showed outstanding athletic prowess.His affinity to Rugby Union and prolific try scoring ability earned him England, and British & Irish Lions selection.His most dramatic try was arguably that scored for England against Australia in 2000 where he won a close footchase eight minutes into injury time to touch down in the corner. When the score was finally awarded after an eternal wait to win the game for England Twickenham went nuts. At that moment the crowd rose as one to acclaim our very own Chiswickian.Dan Luger was awarded the MBE in 2003.

Sadly Gillian died in recent years following a long illness (in a wheelchair too) but she has left Chiswickians with a golden wealth of knowledge in her many books.She lived in Chiswick spending many years on the Glebe Estate. Interior decorator, founding partner with Sybil Colefax of the firm which bears their name. Born in Lingfield, Surrey, where his father was a clerk at the local racecourse. The family moved to Bedford Park following his fathers death in 1915. After leaving school aged 16 in 1923 he joined a decorating and antiques firm, where he learned paint decoration techniques. He established his own business on the Kings Road in Chelsea in 1934, and then founded Colefax and Fowler.After WW2, during which he volunteered as an air raid warden and hospital orderly, the business went through a slump and the business was bought by Nancy Tree.As wartime restrictions relaxed Fowler was involved in the redecoration of dozens of substantial country and town houses along with decorative schemes for Buckingham Palace, Holyroodhouse, Chequers, Chevening, Christchurch, Oxford and the Bank of England. With John Cornforth he wrote “ English Decoration in the 18th Century” ( 1976 ).He considered himself a “ haute couture decorator “ but aimed for simple or  humble elegance.He retired in 1975 but continued as adviser to the National Trust.He died at the Hunting Lodge, Odiham, Hampshire, the property he had purchased in 1947. He never married.

Lucy Middleton ; a cousin of the Yeats children, she visited Bedford Park many times. She was said to be from a family with smuggling origins. She was interested in mysticism and the occult, was in touch with fairies and it was with her, according to Ithel Colquhoun, that W B Yeats “experimented in Tatturaskrying as taught in the Golden Dawn”.Perhaps she was an unfortunate influence on young Willie?

Well done Jim and Micki with these.Are we checking that writers are included in the Chiswick Timeline of authors?Roddy Gradidge was such a character that whenever I saw him it made my day.Dan Farson praised him as “a man who actually used his eyes and imagination instead of restricting his outlook to the drawing board. Ebullient, enthusiastic, ear-ringed Roddy tried so hard to be an eccentric that once he abandoned tha attempt he became one.”He claimed that the kilt was worn by the English before the Scottish and woe betide anyone who called his pigtail a ponytail.I seem to recall that he suffered from gout but I could be wrong.

Still living locally and an Old Boy of Chiswick Grammar School... Brian was often mentioned at School as being one of their success stories. His biography "Before I forget" is a likable read and mentions School Teachers who influenced him.Brian was much involved in the creation of CHANNEL 4 and he was Chairman and MD of London Weekend Television amongst his many years in Chiswick.  A notable resident indeed.

Regarding protesting against the Motorway through Chiswick in the late 1960s. .. the Chiswick Flyover(over the old roundabout) was opened in 1959, the dual carriageway from Wellseley Road...passed Harvard Hill...into Cedars Road and Ellesmere Road had already been built (only one carriageway was ready to use)..AND the big bridge over the railway was there ..perhaps before the War. The last section in Chiswick was from Wellesley Road to the roundabout.  What I'm saying is that it was all done before the end of the 60's!

I remember Roddy Gradidge from the late 60s when he was involved in protesting against the motorway which was due to be built through Chiswick - luckily they decided it would be too expensive and eventually the idea was dropped.  What I didn't know was that he was an architect and that he studied at the same architectural school that I worked for - though many years before, I hasten to add.

Another one has come to light!Prince Dmitri Galitzine  1927-2016.51 Woodstock Road.Son of Prince Nicholas and Princess Irina Galitzine was born in Perm, Soviet Union.In 1932 the family escaped from possible imprisonment and arrived in England with the permission of George V.Together with his 3 sisters, he and his parents settled in Chiswick, which was a centre for the emigre community. His mother published memoirs of her life in Russia before and after the Russian Revolution in “Spirit of Survival”He played a leading role in building the Russian Orthodox Cathedral in Chiswick.He lived in Woodstock Road for many years until his death.

Sir Alec Guinness ; The Brook, Stamford Brook.Actor. With his wife and small son occupied the old part of the house for six freezing winter months in 1945-6. Robin Back met him and helped with his preparation for one of TS Elliots plays. ( Not as some have said, The Cocktail Party, which still awaited its premier!)Robert ( Robin ) Brian Back, 1924-2004 ; 9 South Parade 1940-2004.In 1942 Robin was one of a threesome who started the Bedford Park Players whose aim was to perform plays when the war ended. The expected early armistice , however did not happen and Robin was called up in January 1943 to serve in the Royal Artillery.At first his army life seems to have been largely devoted to trips home and to the theatre, dodging the bombing on the journey back to barracks in Surrey. He first saw action after embarking on D-Day, although did not land in Normandy until the next day. He kept a diary throughout his life ; all his wartime diaries , in tiny writing, have been deposited in the Imperial War Museum.He was demobbed in June 1947 and continued with his acting and joined the House of Arts playing his first role for them, Dumain in loves Labours Lost in 1948.At his house in South Parade he acted, produced and organised, presenting monthly meetings with readings and talks as well as many staged performances for over 50 years. Under Robins care, the House of Arts provided a real social service for many local people.He died on July 25th, 2094, a month or so short of his 80th birthday.

Ah, OK, thanks. I didn't read that article. Local history is fascinating. Someone interested in the area I live in has gone back to find what happened over the years and it is fascinating who lived in the houses before us and the effect of the war (someone killed by a bomb in the last war which amazingly missed the houses). I imagine that in some cases where flats now are on The Avenue bombs dropped on the Victorian/Edwardian houses that are there now.

Bill Bailey, World Champion Sprint Cyclist.33 Marlborough Crescent 1914-1925, 12 Marlborough Crescent 1925-1975.William James “Bill” Bailey ( 1888-1971)He won his first major victory in 1906 as an 18 year old in the Anfield BC ( Liverpool ) 100 mile time trial. Don Taylor lived in Airedale Ave - I worked with him on many Plays of the Month at BBC - a wonderful man - his wife - Ellen Dryden was a playwright who wrote a brilliant play about a school strike in Norfolk - I cannot remember the name. Then upstairs to go through Kelly’s and I had to do all this lots of times before I finally got to the end. Perseverance!Filed it all and left it in a cupboard.Recently got it all out. Researched all the names in “Mainly About Bedford Park People “ and was amazed to see the entire history of most of them.Now all typed up and sent to the Bedford Park Society for their records and they’re as astonished as me.Apparently it’s easier to do this now. McDonald Hobley lived in Chiswick.  Former BBC announcer, he once introduced Sir Stafford Cripps as 'Sir Stifford Crapps'.  He had a flat in Watchfield Court on Sutton Court Road.  Further investigation re Baroness Scotland suggests she did live in Chiswick but not in Watchfield Court.  In seems that it was the cleaner who she got into hot water about hiring, who lived in Watchfield.

Yes indeed Jim.I have sat on his bench more times than I can possibly remember and still do.It was also a favourite place for Anne Naysmith to park herself for a chat and I have tried to get an apple tree planted nearby in memory of her but without success so far even though LBH promised to do so.I recall that one night a villain removed the brass commemorative plaques and they were replaced with slate plaques.What I have here :-Triggs family. 9 South Parade - James and Celia Anne Triggs, sons Harry Inigo and Arthur Bryant Triggs ( b 30/1/1868 )who emigrated to Australia and became a successful sheep farmer ( Oz “Pastoralist”).There were 5 other children.The father, James, died in 1898. His widow, of 82 Stamford Brook Road Nov 1903 died 5/12/1926.Harry Inigo Triggs 1876-1923 ; 33 Priory Road c1888 and 9 South Parade - 1926 ( seems to have owned the property from 1903 but moved in in 1911 )St Michaels Church records reveal that the war memorial seat had been designed by Harry Inigo Triggs, best known as a garden designer.

Forster lived in a flat in Arlington Mansions during the war. right at the top of the right-hand block, and accessed via the left-hand building, and a precarious-looking bridge across the void. He could witness the flames from the London Blitz, according to his biographer. There is a blue plaque outside.

Another one for Melbourne House, South Parade.Sarah Anne Drake ( Ducky) 1803-57, went to reside with the family of the noted botanist John Lindley ( see above)Her role initially was to help with the upbringing of the Lindley children but she soon turned her gifts to plant illustration and in particular orchids.She became one of the worlds greatest botanical illustrators.A memorial plaque to her was unveiled in Longham Church on September 30 2000, incorporating a design taken from her drawing of the Australian orchid Drakaea, named after her by Lindley.Her career was entirely concentrated on the 17 year period that covered her link with Dr Lindley from 1831-1847.Her biographer ( Robert Hamilton) estimated that she drew or painted, during her active 17 years, some 1400 new plants including 60 engravings. She averaged about 75 meticulously coloured plates a year whilst at the same time helping to bring up the Lindley’s three children.Lindley’s son Nathaniel remembered “Melb House” With its upper floors being used as “nurseries“ - for plants not children.

Jack Hutchinson, Sports Editor of the Daily Mirror until, I think, 1972, lived in a house on Staveley Road.  Not sure of the number but it was one of those that is by the entrance to Chiswick House and Gardens.  His wife, Win, was also a journalist and associated with one of the women's magazines and indeed may have been editor.  After Jack Hutchinson died Win Hutchinson eventually moved into a flat at Watchfield Court.

Cannot let this thread die without including avuncular John Sergeant, TV and radio broadcaster who up until lockdown was frequently seen in and around Devonshire Road. He was once snubbed by Margaret Thatcher, but adored on Strictly.Also living in the same area, nearly blind and into his 90s until his passing four years ago was Peter Vaughan.Best remembered perhaps as Grouty, Fletch's bete noire in Porridge.

His Honour Judge Marcus Edwards 1937-; Melbourne House 1965-2006.He was called to the Bar ( M) in 1962. He was appointed as a Recorder in 1985 and as a Circuit Judge on the South Eastern Circuit in 1986.When he bought the house, the works were so extensive that he could stand in the basement and see the sky.Chairman of the Appeal to raise funds for a complete replacement of the roof of St Michael’s Church.Founder member of the Bedford Park Festival. Took an active part in Bedford Park affairs as an early member of the new wave of inhabitants who arrived at the beginning of the revival of its fortunes and did much to further it.He and his wife now live in a small village called Mathon near Ledbury in Herefordshire.I met him many times and he was absolutely charming.On one occasion early in the morning I found a handbag on top of a bin in TGT Mews. It had in it a wallet with an AA card  but no cash or bank cards.The AA card had an address on it. Melbourne House. So I took it straight there. The gate was locked but the police were there with a very distressed lady in her night clothes. So I called to them and held up the bag. The lady and police ran to the gate and unlocked it so that I could give her the bag. She was so relieved that she burst into tears. She said that she was not concerned about the missing cash and bank cards which she had cancelled but she needed her diary which was still in the bag.The burglar had somehow managed to get into the huge back garden,  broken the kitchen window and taken her bag whilst they watching the TV the night before.She wanted to reward me but I refused. I was just relieved to have been able to return it.The next time I met Marcus he told me that the police had on that same morning whilst patrolling in King Street seen a man putting some cards into a litter bin. They stopped him, retrieved the cards and arrested him.Brilliant work on the part of the police.He also opened his very extensive back garden for the Bedford Park Festival. A wonderful space with carved stone lions, lawns and roses.A much loved former resident.

It's often quoted that Lord Coe was born in Chiswick at the former "Dan Mason Maternity Hospital" on Chiswick Mall. I have a feeling that I've seen that he was actually born at Queen Charlottes (in W6).Seb has occasionally visited W4 for events.Was he ever a resident?

Not a former resident as such but a visitor to Chiswick. Dante Gabriel Rossetti specifically came to Chiswick to find an appropriately piece of rustic wall to paint from nature, as seen in many back yards here in Bedford Pk & South Pde, to paint for the Study for 'Found', dated 1853.

I saw Hugh Grant a few years ago when he was sitting in his very muddy car in Priory Avenue and I was posting a letter in the box in the Vicarage wall.When he realised that I’d recognised him whilst he was using his phone, he  quickly picked up a newspaper and held it to his face so that I couldn’t take a photo. John Marlborough East, 1860-192431 Blandford Road 1895-97.Actor / manager who bought his house from his friend Stepniak.At 6ft 3in in height he was also a teller of tall tales, so it is difficult to disentangle fact from fiction in his life story ; indeed his very name was made up, as his real name was John Michael Baker ( he took the surname East from his mother, Grace East ). From 1892 to 1904 he was licensee/General Manager at the Lyric Theatre Hammersmith, where he produced 12 pantomimes, 365 melodramas and more than 140 curtain raisers. He later moved to the Britannia Theatre, Hoxton, where he pioneered the presentation of dramatic sketches in the music hall, and at the Crystal Palace.John East was a friend of the great Victorian actor William Terriss ( who was later murdered.In 1914 East went into early films, founding the Neptune Studios at Borehamwood with Percy Nash. This closed in 1917, after he made and performed in various three-reel dramas and comedies, often directed by Nash.Afterwards East continued his acting career, being voted one of the greatest film actors by Picturegoer readers.He played Old Kipps in “Kipps” ( 1921) and then, apparently, supporting actor in “Owd Bob” 1924.By then his career was all over and he was on the promenade at Margate, disguised as the Daily Sketch’s cartoon elephant, Uncle Oojah.

I may have spotted a couple of omissions.What about Hugh Grant? Brought up in Chiswick - referencing his father in a Wikipedia article - "raised his family in Chiswick, west London, where the Grants lived next to Arlington Park Mansions on Sutton Lane." Hugh went to Latymer Upper School (a scholarship apparently).Also, whilst Cath Kidston was mentioned, her husband Hugh Padham was not - they lived, until very recently, on Chiswick Mall. Hugh is a very successful record producer who pioneered the "Gated Drum" effect, initially with Peter Gabriel but most famously (and to great effect) on the "In the Air Tonight" track by Phil Collins, who, as we all know, attended Chiswick School back in the day...Also not mentioned was Adrian Chiles, ex-host of the One Show and football pundit who still lives in Chiswick (saw him last week).

Said House: Sir Nigel Playfair (1874-1935), who was manager of the Lyric Theatre, Hammersmith, and lived here between 1931 and 1934. Viscount Davidson, Chairman of the Conservative Party (1927-30) and later Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster, lived at Said House from 1956 with his wife, a Member of Parliament who became an early life peeress as Baroness Northchurch of Chiswick.

What about Sir John Issac Thornycroft, ship designer and builder, who I believe lived at Eyot Villa on Chiswick Mall for a while, but of course also started building his ships on the Thames at Chiswick.Indeed, I would suspect that almost every house on Chiswick Mall has had someone noteworthy person living in them at some time.  Daley Thompson has already been mentioned as a former resident and for a brief period I understand he lived in a house on Chiswick Mall.  Horace Walpole of course and one of the earlier series of The Apprentice used Said House as the 'base' for the contestants.  Slightly off the main subject I appreciate on this last one but I would guess at some stage someone noteworthy lived in Said House.

Well done with Dr John Todhunter 1839 - 1916.Lived at 27 Bath Road 1881 - 83 and Orchardcroft 3 The Orchard 1883 -96.He gave up medicine and became a playwright and poet without great success but a valuable catalyst to others. His verse plays inspired W B Yeats and he was a force behind the foundation of the Irish Literary Society.He was wealthy enough to be a collector of J B Yeats paintings - a collection which apparently perished in WW2.

Sergius Stepniak 1852-9531 Blandford Road 1893-95 and 48 Woodstock Road autumn 1895.By the time he reached Bedford Park in 1892-93 he was 40 and enjoyed the social life.Hodgson describes him as being devoid of wrinkles, or even the slightest line of care with small, somewhat Japanese eyes with “a huge Square head crowned by a luxuriant growth of shaggy black hair .... A Russian eagle could have comfortably built its nest in either of the two crevices by which Stepniaks raven locks were divided.On Sunday 22nd December 1895 he hosted the Calumet at his house in Woodstock Road - JM East says that he visited Stepniak on this day along with Ben Webster, May Whitt’s, HB Irving, William Terris ( who was later murdered ) as well as George Lazarev.On 23rd December Stepniak set out for a meeting with Volkhovsky and Lazarev at 56 Rylett Crescent, Hammersmith ( he was to sign an agreement to edit a new magazine for Lazarev).He was hit by a train of the North and South Western Junction Railway and killed. The Times of December 30 makes it clear that this was on the Woodstock Road level crossing and not on the Bath Road crossing as has been generally assumed. The driver blew his whistle and the stoker shouted to no avail. One explanation is that, as a prisoner in Turkey, he developed the power to shut out exterior sounds when he was thinking -“How else could I endure English dinner parties”, he used to say. Jerome K Jerome, who walked to Bedford Park with him from the Uxbridge Road on the previous Sunday, claims that Stepniak was deep in talk and did not notice an approaching tran on the crossing till he plucked his sleeve. He concluded: “ He had betrayed some secret, it was said, to the Russian Police, and had been given a choice between suicide or denunciation. The truth was never known”.His funeral was attended by Dr Aveling, William  orris, John Burns, MP, Mrs Eleanor Marx Aveling, Keir Hardie and a great crowd of others. He was cremated at Woking. In the well known drawing by TH Wilson, Stepniak glowers at his study at 31 Blandford Road. One wonders whether there was a servant at the end of the bell-pull.“ Mainly about Bedford Park People” by Lawrence Duttson.

I've been looking back at Tom Greeves's book on Bedford Park (and where would this place have been without Tom Greeves – wonderful chap)..Came across a wonderful drawing of Sergius Stepniak – described as the man most hated and feared by Soviet officialdom.  An intellectual from the privileged classes, Stepniak formed a political movement that was suppressed with such brutality he was forced to flee to England.  Settled in Bedford Park among the congenial idealists from all walks of life who were attracted to live in this famously fashionable suburb. .  31 Blandford Road was his chosen home.  Later he was killed by a train near the level crossing at the eastern end of Bath Road.  But whether that was the work of Cheka or the KGB I couldn't possibly say...

This bit is true: Woolfox Lodge was converted into a World War 2 RAF bomber base, where after the war I lived with my parents and brothers and sisters in one of the Nissen huts which served as barracks. Other barracks were lived in by Displaced Persons and Jewish refugees from all over Europe, and despite our collective poverty we had a lovely time and lived like kings. The  RAF base has now been ploughed  up for farmland.

Willy Stroker was born in Duke Road in 1852 and after working as a stable lad at Fullers brewery moved to the Woolfox Lodge fox-hunting and racing stables of Sir Robert Davenport-Osborne in Rutland as a groom. He eventually beecame Sir Robert's private trainer, winning  the 1894 Grand Military Gold Cup at Sandown Park with a chaser calledd Carlos Du Fruitier, ridden by a German army officer named Oberleutnant Whet Faartz.

Coin Counterfeiters.After experimenting at making 2p and 10p coins, two chemists tried their hand at fake 50p pieces at a small factory at 87 Woodstock Road.During a four-year period they made 266,000 fake 50p pieces but never put them into circulation.At the Old Bailey on Friday the 7th October 1976 Zygmund Mach, aged 47, of Paddington was jailed for five years and Bernard  Arthur Randall, aged 45, of Northolt was jailed for three years. Mach spent £30,000 setting up the premises for coin production and dying special metal. They moved into the premises and installed a false wall with a secret door and fitted electrified grilles to the front of the premises. “The idea started completely innocently with an experiment on a new printing process but then became an obsession”, said Michael Mansfield , the QC defence for Randall. He added , “The idea....had overtaken, absorbed and almost destroyed him.”

Thomas Griffiths Wainewright 1794-1847 was brought up in style by his elderly maternal grandparents in Linden House Turnham Green (where Linden Gardens are now), his grandfather being the aforementioned Ralph Griffiths. He took on a literary career rubbing shoulders with the foremost writers of the day.  But he spent much of his life in debt.  His 2 claims to fame today are that he twice defrauded the Bank of England, and the number of murders he committed. First his uncle, then his mother-in-law followed by his sister-in-law all in the space of about 18 months. He’d taken out life insurance of £18,000 on his sister-in-law only months before. He’d used strychnine but at that time there was no forensic test to prove strychnine poisoning. Nevertheless the insurance companies refused to pay out and he was furious. At some time he had fallen in love with the daughter of a friend and he went to Boulogne to visit the friend and persuade him to take out life insurance of £3,000 with the same insurance company. As soon as the ink was dry he brought out the crystals of strychnine. He himself didn’t gain financially from his friend’s death but he was determined on revenge on the insurance company. It is thought he murdered and attempted to murder several more people. Charles Dickens, Arthur Conan Doyle and Oscar Wilde (Pen, Pencil and Poison) all wrote about him.

In January 1766 Jean-Jacques Rousseau came to live in London. Firstly in the Strand but finding the capital to be full of the "black vapours" he moved to the village of Chiswick, probably Church Street. I sort of gather it was his intention to reside there a while but it was only a week before he moved on to Wootton Hall in Staffordshire. Another doctor...who went to Chiswick Grammar School and who played cricket for Old Meadonians in Chiswick House grounds in later years was notable indeed.He was a First Division Football referee... performing weekly in front of tens of thousands. Elwyn Jones, 1923-1982Writer and producer.31 Abinger Road.He was best known as the creator of Z-cars for the BBC in 1962. He wrote many TV dramas from the early 60s to the late 70s including “Softly, Softly”, “ Barlow at Large”, “Jack the Ripper” and “Second Verdict”He was the author of several true crime novels including “The Last Two to Hang.”

Thank you for this James.I have for as long as I can remember been a great fan of linoleum and particularly of the dark green which was used extensively for counter tops.I have a Forbo Nairn catalogue with details of its environmentally friendly make up and it’s applications. Also with photos of the many ways that is being used for fabulous floor designs.It has also been artistically used for many years and still is, for making Lino cuts for printing and Picasso was one of the many who used it.Many years ago I found a Lino cut somewhere and this one is dark brown with a wonderful basket of fruit and a decanter cut into it and showing reflective light.It is backed with hessian and is still pliable with no signs of ageing.I don’t think it’s a Picasso! but it has been very carefully and beautifully cut.I had no idea that this lovely linoleum was invented in Chiswick.

Hetty (Harriett) Wheeldon, arrested and charged with attempting to poison Lloyd George with a dart covered in curare in 1917, was living at 29 Windmill Road in 1920. Her sister and mother were convicted but she was released without charge. She married my great uncle, Arthur McManus, first chairman of the Communist Party of Great Britain, from that address on 1st June 1920. She died of peritonitis in the same year. He died in 1927 and his ashes were taken to Moscow and placed in the Kremlin wall where they still remain.

Briefly, Alain Fournier, author of Le Grand Meaulnes. Stayed in Burlington Road with the Manager of the Sanderson wallpaper factory as a sort of work experience. Chiswick library used to have a copy of a book called Towards the Lost Domaine, which comprised the letters he sent back to his family in France. Very interesting descriptions of Chiswick - “music pouring out of all the windows” and, if you know his book, a description of a party which seemed to be his inspiration.

3 Bath Road : Percy Angelo Staynes 1927-1953.Artist and designer. For 40 years he was furniture and fabric designer and decoration advisor To the Canadian Pacific Steamships : he supervised the decoration of their luxury ocean liners, including “ Empress of Japan” and “ Empress of Britain”. He designed the Chevron fabric but sadly chose to accept a flat fee of £7 for it - it became a long term success. He illustrated books including “ Gullivers Travels”  (Sidgewick and Jackson ). He also wrote poetry and on art subjects and literature.He designed posters including for Coleman’s mustard and others which are now in the V&A.When he died his son John Anthony Staynes ( known as Anthony ) who was also an artist and painter moved into the studio behind the house and used it for his paintings.He led the ‘vie de boheme’ in Paris. Throughout his career he held private invitation studio shows and culminating in 1987 at the Arts Ed School in Bath Road. His sister Jill, who wrote murder mysteries with her friend Margaret Storey, had his artworks and a manuscript autobiography.Since his death some of his paintings and drawings have been sold through Christie’s.

Just a few years later he was faced with a monumental income tax bill which he was quite unable to pay. 1Bath Road.Martin Travers ( Howard Martin Otis Travers.) 1913 -1919.He was one of the most versatile and prolific ecclesiastical artists of his generation.He was one of the foremost stained glass painters of his time and also a notable church furnisher and designer of new buildings, graphics and jewellery.In 1925 he was awarded the Grand Prix for stained glass at the International Exhibition of Decorative and Industrial Arts in Paris.Amongst his many works was the complete refurbishment of the interior of St Augustines Church in Queensgate including the massive reredos in 1928.Also the Canterbury University College memorial window ( now the Arts Centre ) in Christchurch, New Zealand, commemorating over 400 staff and students who served in the 1st World War ( 98 killed and 200 wounded )The whole window is in the shape of Britain with red dragons snarling at the soldiers ( as in the St George window in St Michael and All Angels chapel, Bath Road, which he also designed and it is signed HMOT, dated 1915 )The New Zealand window is massive and I wonder how he got it all together at that time.He was a conscientious objector to the war and continued with his work in the studio at 1 Bath Road, much of which was memorials to those who had died in the war.In 1916 he became a Red Cross ambulance driver to avoid imprisonment.In 1912 Travers designed a window for Chesterblade Church, Somerset.In his notebooks is a first draft of an invitation to his friends and family to come and see the design in his studio at 1Bath Road.In 1914 he was commissioned to design a reredos, altar and stained glass window for the chapel of All Souls at Saint Michael and All Angels Church, Bedford Park ( next to where he lived and worked ).He also designed for the church, a wooden gilded processional cross and an outside rood above the door. He later designed the internal door case for the same door. He was involved in the design of the bronze and stone memorial to Jonathan Carr ( the first owner of 1Bath Road), who died in 1915. It is situated outside on the SW wall, next to Travers window.He became a friend of John Betjeman who wrote in notes preserved in the council for the care of churches that Travers was “a most charming and inspiring companion and a man of infinite kindness. He was quietly amusing and a good friend.”Betjeman used Travers name in his poem “ Anglo-Catholic Congresses”, in 1958.“ Yet under the Travers baroque, in a lime washed brightness,The fiddle-back vestments a-glitter with morning rays,Our ladies image, in multi-candled brightness,The bells and banners - those were the waking days,When faith was taught and fanned to a golden blaze.”It was during his days in 1Bath Road, that his relationship with Christine Wilmour developed. She was a tempestuous lady of whom his mother who had also moved into the house did not approve and it was a liaison which was to shape the rest of his life and in 1917 it became necessary for him to flee to Birmingham with Christine, due to her pregnancy, in order to escape from his mothers wrath, ensuing scandal and arrange a rapid marriage.He was not then able to return to 1 Bath Road and he moved his workshop to Fulham Glass Works in 1919.

I still have strong memories of being invited to Dick Langton's (I think 90th) birthday party upstairs at Andy's. His daughter had somehow arranged an authentic turkish belly dancer as the entertainment. Dick in his own inimitable way loved it. James, I met his daughter by chance last summer.We struck up a conversation blah! blah! blah! and I asked her if she had always lived in Chiswick. It was then that she told me about her father.You see, someone told me 15 years ago that the original owner of Andy's wrote that music. So I asked Andy's daughter and she took a step back and her mouth fell open. "How did you know that?" she asked.And that was when she told he the family history.Talked to her a few days ago to ask some more info.She is really a lovely lady.Funny old world innit?

Now I’m really confused Marlene.As I recall Andy owned the building but sold the business to some Turkish people who installed a new facade with charred wood, then because they weren’t getting any business they started making a lot of noise outside blowing bugles to attract attention.but were failing to pay the rent.So Andy took it back and turned the flat upstairs into a dining area for parties.If it isn’t Andy who I have seen most days sitting at a table outside with his coffee it must be a twin but he always smiles and says hello when I walk past.

The person who wrote this music was none other than Antonik Kasparian otherwise known as ‘Andy' - the former and  original owner of Andy’s KebabTurnham Green, Chiswick W4.Andy was born in Armenia and his wife was Greek. Before he started Andy’s he had a day job and in the evening played clarinet in a band in the Omar Khayyam nightclubin Cannon Street . It was a popular hotspot and frequented by many show people and VIPs.One night the members of the 007 production team went in and asked the band if they could provide some music for a belly dancing scene in the new Bond filmApparently they weren’t happy with the score they were given. So Andy improvised some music and they were thrilled with it. Later they came back and  recorded it and it was used as background music for the iconic belly dancing sequence. So this must have been in 1962/3. In 1969 Andy opened up Andy’s Kebab. Few people in Bedford Park had ever seen a kebab before so Andy used to give tasters away to the publicto drum up business. I guess the family lived upstairs and everyone was involved in the operation - mum and dad cooking, daughter did accounts etc.In 1976 he sold up to some Turkish people and moved down the road to new premises - a former builders merchant or tire shop (can’t remember)and opened Wine and Lamb which had live music.Glad to share the story of Andy, whose restaurant we have all enjoyed to this day and his unsung contribution to the Bond legend.

I don't think anyone has mentioned the poet James Berry OBE. He lived for a time in Homecross House on Fishers Lane. He can be found on Youtube and he has been mentioned on the forum in past years. Trevor D Hamilton posted the following in 2009: "Imagine my shock to find a little old man standing silently in my flat as I went to leave for an appointment. he was searching for his girlfriend Martha and wasn't for leaving until he had found her. He was very well spoken but looked like he was trying out for a part in Tom Sawyer with his West Indian colour, disheveled baggy suit and straw hat. He seemed absolutely charming except that he shrugged my gentle guiding hand away rather firmly when I tried to lead him out into the hall. The Police explained that they had been looking for him all day and arrived in minutes. So James Berry OBE came to visit me and has returned home safe and well with the help of the local constabulary. OK he was very confused and I doubt I would have got much sense from the poor man but I can't help feeling someone really quite special has passed my way if only fleetingly." James died aged 92 in 2017.

When 1 Priory Gardens, opposite the Vicarage was vacant and the large garden became a wilderness, the Vicar used to take the goats across the road and leave them there for a while to clear the vegetation including thistles and nettles. The goats then used to climb up onto the remains of an old wall and astonished passing drivers stopped to to view the scene, causing traffic holdups.1 Priory Gardens then became the Head Office of the Victorian Society which has just been extensively refurbished.

Rev Michael Champneys; Vicar of St Michael and All Angels 1979-83.He rode a motorcycle, with all the leathers etc, and had two goats in the Vicarage Garden. The congregation were encouraged to feed them by throwing suitable garden stuff over the Vicarage wall. Some used to take barrowloads of rose cuttings, particularly the thorny ones, which the goats loved, and sling them over the wall.

I believe the surname of the guy that owned the two old American cars parked on Thames road near Rose Cottage was "Goody" the number plates was PEN 15 and WOM 13.They not illegal plates, but the owner was done for how they were displayed.I believe that PEN 15 was sold a few years ago for £95000

Another fun thing with Cindy the carer.She had to take one of her daughters to see their doctor at the Health Centre.Her daughter needed to go to the toilet and when she was in there a pair of feet clad in plastic bags full of wool appeared under the door..She shrieked and split her tight mini skirt from top to bottom.It was Anne Naysmith and Cindy had to rescue her daughter.She decided to turn the skirt round so that the split was at the front and wrap a scarf round it, then hasten to Cancer Research to find another skirt for getting home.

I have some personal experience of this!When I was looking after my disabled mother who needed Carers 3 times a day the local agency sent  a young lady called Cindy who was really lovely and deeply caring.She told me that she had escaped  with her two young daughters from a violent husband in the Midlands.She packed some bags with a few clothes and got on a coach to Victoria then a train to Chiswick for Erin Pizzeys refuge which was the only place she knew of.Erin greeted her warmly and gave her and her children shelter. Got her children into Belmont school and found her a job at Ealing Hospital where she worked for a while before becoming a carer for an agency.She was the loveliest person who brought flowers for us.When she had paid work she was able to afford a small flat in Chiswick which Erin helped to find for her so that her daughters could continue at the same school.When my mother died the agency didn’t inform her so she turned up as usual and burst into floods of tears.The agency wouldn’t allow her to take time off to go to the funeral but she sent some flowers and a lovely card.I happened to meet her one day and she said that she had left the agency and gone back to Ealing Hospital  but would never forget how much Erin had helped her when she was so desperate.

John Lindley, Botanist (1799-1865) lived briefly at Melbourne House in South Parade and then at Bedford House, The Avenue from 1835-1865.He became the assistant secretary at the Horticultural Society in 1822 where he organised the first flower shows in England.He recommended Kew Gardens be turned over to the nation and used as the botanical headquarters for the UK.There is a blue plaque on Bedford House which is now divided into flats.

Yes it was Jayne Mansfield and well done with Watchfield Court.This is definitely not for notable residents who are living in Chiswick now or for invading their privacy!I am fortunate in having acquired a copy of an amazing book written by Lawrence Duttson and Christina Speight, who are alas no longer with us,  titled “ Mainly about Bedford ParkPeople” in which every house in every road was researched and it’s astonishing how many artists, craftsmen, actors, poets and politicians have lived in the area.It occurred to me that it would be good if we can find out who else has lived in the rest of Chiswick and do searches for our own houses which we might find quite surprising!

Hollywood legend Bette Davis!!!Nah.  But she does play a part in the story of three of Chiswick's most treasured theatricals:-James Cossins:- superb character actor.  Countless roles.  Even Faulty Towers..Alvin Rakoff:- wonderful Canadian writer, stage & film director, still with us in his nineties.Sheila Hancock:- Terrific actress.  Lived locally.  Married to John Thaw.  Enough said..So – it's the late sixties and Bette Davis agrees to play one-eyed Mrs Taggart, the lead in “The Anniversary” a black comedy  to be shot at Elstree with an otherwise all-British cast.Alvin was to direct.  But Bette and Alvin soon fell out and he was replaced after a week.  She didn't need a director.  All she required was someone to worship her and point the camera in her direction.  Great, great actress but wrong on this occasion.  The screenplay was far too wordy and needed someone like Alvin to bring it all together.  No matter.  Lucky escape for him.Jimmy Cossins (lived in Bedford House on the Avenue and later in Dale Street on the Glebe Estate.. no longer with us) played Bette's eldest son who has a penchant for stealing ladies knickers off local washing lines by night.  His is head and shoulders the best performance in the film.  He doesn't quite steal it from Bette Davis.  But he gets bloody close..Sheila Hancock was excellent as always.  But the haughty behaviour of this Hollywood superstar was something she'd never come across before and, to put it bluntly, she loathed Davis.Anyway – unlike Now Voyager etc)  the film didn't do well and has since disappeared with very little trace (except my CD copy and my portrait of Bette Davis in our kitchen).  Doubt anyone on here's ever heard of it but I thought the 3-way local connection made it worth including..

The daughter of John Dudley, Duke of Northumberland. Lady Mary married Sir Henry Sidney in 1551 – their son was the renowned poet Sir Philip Sidney. He was said by contemporaries to have acquired his skills as a poet from his mother.She was a close friend and companion of Queen Elizabeth I. Her brother Robert Dudley (who had a palace at Kew) was the Queen's closest male companion.  Lady Mary retired to her mansion, behind Strand on the Green, when she was disfigured through small pox. She had acquired the virus whilst nursing Elizabeth I through the disease at Hampton Court Palace in October 1562. She was still writing letters to the Queen from Chiswick ten years later. She died in 1586.

You note that the painter John Butler Yeats lived in Chiswick along with his son William (poet) and 2 x daughters, but omitted to mention his other son Jack B Yeats, also a painter and generally considered to be superior to his father - his works certainly fetch a tidy sum these days.Incidentally Jack B Yeats also won an Olympic Silver Medal for Ireland at the 1924 Games in Paris. For painting! (It was an Olympic event in those days, along with Architecture, Music, Literature and Sculpture.)

WB's father, the painter John B Yeats and his talented daughters, publisher and designer Elizabeth, ("Lolly") founder of the Dun Emer Press, and Lily the embroider at Cuala Industries. The Great Westminster Parliamentarian, Ireland's "Liberator" and political leader for Catholic Emancipation, 1929, used to frequent Chiswick pubs and play knock-down ginger on the way home.Oh and Daley Thompson, 56 Woodstock.

Hendren was indeed an outstanding cricketer, as you say.But he was no mean footballer, either including playing over 400 games for Brentford FC, also representing England at football in a Victory international after WW1 (though such games are not officially recognised).Starting out playing for "Sandersons" (factory works team?), he failed at first to make it at Brentford, QPR and Man. City while young, but a spell at Coventry City saw him progress before returning to Brentford.From Wiki:"Aged 22 Hendren returned to Brentford for the 1911-12 season. Maintaining both cricket and football careers meant that Hendren sometimes missed the opening games of the season during this second stint with the club, although during the 1920-21 season he made only 2 appearances due to the 1920-21 Australian Tour and made no appearances in the 1924-25 season for the same reason. He was chosen to represent the Southern League XI against the Football League XI during the 1913-14 season. Brentford rose from the Southern League to the Football League during Hendren's 15 year period with the club, and he retired from football to commit himself to cricket aged 38 having made 432 appearances in total for the club, scoring 74 goals. He was posthumously inducted into the Brentford Hall of Fame in 2015."[Back in those days, the gap in standard between Southern League and Football League was not so wide as eg today between Football League and non-League.]

The flat I occupy was once Eamonn Andrews's residence, Windsor House, Heathfield Gardens, part of the Watchfield Estate. A later occupant was the widow of Michael Flanders. She ran a charity for wheelchair users from the address, and the fact that one of m daughters was a wheelchair user persuaded her daughters Stephanie Flanders is one) to sell it to me.Also on the Watchfield Estate in the 80s were Jimmy Young and Sidney Lotterby, producer for the BBC.And the tenor Robert Tear lived just over the border in Hammersmith.

Good post Denis.Not many people will be aware that there was an indoor cricket school accessed through the George IV pub.Two Chiswick School chums Bob Frith (Twickenham opticians) and Andy Ronay were great achievers in the world of athletics. One for cricket followers:The most prolific runscorer for Middlesex County Cricket Club is "Patsy" Hendren who played 51 Test matches for England and scored 40,302 first class runs, more than Middlesex glamour boys Denis Compton and Mike Gatting.Hendren was born and lived near Turnham Green, in Jessop's Row, now gone.His final innings and departure from the field was uniquely similar to that of the legendarary Sir Don Bradman's exit from the Oval wicket in 1948. It had an address on its collar for the Orchard so I took my belt off and walked it round there.No reply at the house so I tried next door and Anne came.Couldn’t leave it with her because they had a dog of their own so we dragged a dustbin so that she could climb over the fence and unbolt the neighbours back gate to leave the dog in the back garden.Richard used to take their dog to the Common and throw balls for him and I often met Anne round the shops for a chat about old times. Lived next door to Dickie Briers and his missus Ann Davies for a few years and knew them quite well.  Down The Orchard.  He also knew my mum who lived on The Avenue.  Especially towards his end when he used to run out of breath on his travels...  the two of them used to sit on the wall and natter for ages just outside St Catherine's Court.Used to play darts and talk theatre with John Hurt and Donna in the Tabard.  Before they went to Kenya and later split up.  My girlfriend at the time acted with him in The Seagull at the Lyric in Hammersmith.  Donna was great fun.  John – very serious about himself.  Lovely house they had in Bedford Park.  Had a special wall that could be raised to give them a gigantic lounge...Jimmy Ellis was an entertaining hoot.  Great company.  Used to drink with him in the Tabard.  At that stage he'd moved into a flat in Bedford House – just next to The Vihara..PS :- re the OP headline:- actors shouldn't really be considered on the “notable” side of this list ..  More like romantic vagabonds....  Not to be taken too seriously...
