Masterchef Final. Spoiler alert.
We were a bit surprised by the choice of winner. We were sure that Sandy was going to win because of the sheer range of her invention and particularly by the positive comments of John and Gregg. And apart from the questionable choice of including a slice of pear in one course there didn’t seem to be any technical errors in her dishes. As for David, he had always been our best bet owing to the artistry of his presentation and sheer talent and consistency. But like so many of his predecessors he fell at the final hurdle owing to a surprise slip-up, in this case, the weird combination of ice and sponge. But iirr there was also a problem with Thomas’s pastry. So when it came to the announcement we were gobsmacked. But no disrespect to Thomas. He too had an excellent record of producing imaginative and delicious re-imaginings of trad British fare.Having said that, until the actual final I was fairly sure that Sandy was going to be a runner-up. She was too different, too experimental. And also, on account of my perfect record of having favourites that lost I had concluded that it had to be Thomas who would win. The irony.
