No sure this idea that China should pay us all back for the losses from coronavirus has been particularly well thought through.Firstly, we don't know for sure what exactly were the origins of the virus. It may have reached pandemic proportions first in China but that may be because of its very densely populated cities which make them unusually vulnerable. It may have existed elsewhere beforehand for some time and only come to global attention when it spread to large population areas.Secondly, if you were to institute a system in which countries were financially responsible for diseases they originated Britain would be faced with huge bills for Mad Cow Disease which we verifiably are to blame for.Thirdly, as some people have already pointed out it is impossible and counterproductive to boycott Chinese goods. A huge proportion of global manufactured products contain some components made in China. When a product says 'made in China' on it will probably include a large number of components made in other countries, sometimes even Britain. There are good reasons to have reservations about the Chinese government but the generally accepted view is that they have acted well in their response to the crisis. Taking prompt and effective action, alerting the WHO early, sharing their experiences with other governments to help them defeat the disease and sending experienced doctors and vital equipment to other countries including the UK.The lesson of this pandemic is not that we need to find out who is to blame and punish them but that disease has no borders and that our well-being is best assured by working together with other countries.
