COVID-19 - What it really means.

Last might I took a phone call from Dave, my oldest friend from college. He lives with his wife (also has two adult children) in another part of the country, where he owns a small packaging company.I had assumed his company would be closed down as non-essential, until he explained that they have to stay open since they supply food and pharmaceutical companies. He employs 10 people, including his daughter in the office and his son in the warehouse. They currently have 7 staff off, inc son and daughter, either because they have symptoms or because they have a family member with same. This leaves Dave, an office secretary and a warehouseman to carry on.  But that's only the half of it. His wife has a very serious health condition, so is terrified that she might be struck down. And the reason he phoned me yesterday was to let me know that his father had just died from the virus. Now it should be said that his father was 88 and living with advanced dementia in a care home, so it was not completely unexpected. But the point is, he was basically confined to his room, so it must have been brought to him by a staff member. The care home now has six (I think) more cases to deal with.Meanwhile, his wife of over 60 years barely got to wave goodbye from a distance as they loaded him into an ambulance to take him to hospital, where he died very soon after. That is the reality of this bloody disease and anyone who isn't taking it seriously is a complete idiot (or worse).
