Hounslow Council Leader Blasts Chiswick Shoppers

Obvious question but was the Council leader's travel essential?  If not why was the esteemed leader not following the same Govt guidelines that he is criticising others for not following?Very noticeable that he criticises the people of the only Tory enclave in his Labour paradise. Does he regularly drive through Chiswick on a Sunday (he represents Syon ward so may do so) - if not how does he know what a regular Sunday morning looks like? From what I could see most people were food shopping and even the coffee shops were take away only.  Yes B&Q was open but they were apparently only letting one person in as another person left

I think the panic-buying in Sainsbury's was caused by  people from Kensington and Fulham filling their cars to go and self-isolate in the countryside at their second homes. Of course, nobody from Chiswick would do that, would they? They've forgotten that the locals still have shotguns and pitchforks.  Not to mention locals first when it comes to ventilators.

Carl - have you been to Hounslow recently. Until a couple of weeks ago I was cycling up and down the car free High Street most days. Loads of shops, mostly apparently thriving and not too many empty. Probably a bit downmarket for Chiswickians but a wasteland - hardly!

Guy. You an your Leader Should look a bit closer to home.There are families crowding together having Barbecues in a Heston park.Surly that is helping to spread the virus?Or doesn't the leader venture that far into Hounslow as its a Labour ward

If rather than being in his car the Council Leader had been at home watching the news he would have seen that nearly every high street in the nation was quite busy. Good weather and the anticipation that there would be further restrictions imposed meant that many people felt they should go out. The overwhelming majority probably had no alternative given the failure of delivery services.Steve Curran needs to reflect whether his dispatch of enforcement officers to 'hundreds' of shops throughout the borough added to the risk of infection or not. They all had to get to work to do that and probably generated more risky human contact than the desperate 'non-essential' retailers they were harassing and who were all perfectly willing to comply with government instructions to close the day after.As far as I am aware his very much non-essential traffic wardens continue to walk round our streets potentially spreading disease and serving no good purpose other than to increase council revenue.Before I'd felt Steve Curran was a decent down-to-earth politician with the broad based concern for the people in the borough. This behaviour suggests a streak of authoritarianism which he is seeking to justify by demonising one part of the community he overseas. This is very concerning.
