Do you know the wholesale price they are having to pay?  It is quite possible the problem lies higher up the supply chain.

It may be that wholesalers are increasing prices so I wouldn't be so quick to judge.

It actually doesn't sound too bad as a price if I am honest from what I have seen and indeed many things have gone up in price incl paracetamol in pharmacies due to wholesale price changes.

There are no shortages in any of the supply chain.The problem of overcharging was brought up in the commons a couple of days ago.

They have been taking a while to refill shelves with medicines in the supermarkets, probably waiting for next delivery, the staff must be so exhausted.

I have been told on good authority that Budgen's were actually having to pay £5 for each tablet!

Then the good authority is either misinformed or being economical with the truth.
Even if they are (I doubt it) paying £5,00 per bar there is no excuse to mark it up by 40%.

We got Ibuprofen (for back ache) for 32p a pack of 16 in Lidl this week, also Home Bargains had plenty of them for around the same price.

Who in their right mind would pay £5 wholesale in the first place and pass on that cost + That in itself it bad buisness. Id rather have my shelf empty than pass over my £5 to fill my shelf with a bar of soap. Same for toilet roll and other goods. Its called taking the p*ss for cash. And i cant believe for one moment someone would pay that £5 i the first place so i thinks its debatable if someone has.

Soory Viv,i am a cynic if one is paying £5 wholesale for a bar of soap.Ive gone and looked at many wholesale websites,and while you cant get prices on many unless logging in and many are not taking new registartions. But its quite clear that the price of soap where i have seen them has not gone up at all, but the wholesale purchaser, like the consumer, has been limited to the number one can purchase. This is to protect a steady stream of goods for all its retail customers. You can buy soap at all the major shops for around 60p a bar upwards. Some have offers still available on certain soap products online. So on that basis,ive a problem with the claim that anyone is paying £5

Budgens have always been a rip off, they are selling mayonnaise for £2.95 yet the corner shop on Acton Lane is selling it for £2.15, my breakfast cereal is £1 more expensive at Budgens - a 50% hike on Sainsbury’s and that’s without a national crisis, with it they clearly feel it’s their opportunity to cash in big time.  At a time when lots of people have no income they should be ashamed of themselves.Certainly in Booker wholesale prices where remaining the same, they certainly weren’t trying to capitalise on this situation.

As far as I'm aware none of the major UK wholesalers - Costco, Bookers, Makro etc have increased their prices and if Budgens, and the Grove Park one is a franchise, are charging that price for a tablet of soap it sounds like they're profiteering.

BTW Makro in the UK is now Bookers but strangely is cheaper on some lines.

Are we comparing like with like?  The original post quoted a price for 250ml, which sounds to me like a liquid soap.  However, the comparison is being made with bars of soap (100g bars).I have no idea whether Budgens is or is not overcharging, but we should at least make sure that the comparison is accurate

I really dislike this thread.  You are not compelled to buy the stuff.  So what if the shopkeeper is making a couple of quid, maybe he sells 5 bottles a week, so he makes an extra ten quid.  So what.  Big deal.  How petty to begrudge him that when he keeps the shop stocked as best he can to serve the community, dealing with the public carrying lord knows what in terms of germs.  Me, I shut up shop and let you all queue up in the misery that is Sainsburys.

My mistake on that one.
I have checked Carex anti-bacterial online at Booker. they have stock at £7.80 (for SIX bottles)!  Their own brand stuff is even cheaper.
