Thanks for the reference to the JC version, Cllr. Hearn.Surely the point is that it really doesn't matter who thinks which version is "better"?Rather it is that Cash has done his own distinctive version, and we may choose which of the two we prefer? For it's a pet hate of mine when a performer covers a classic associated with another performer and simply reproduces the original as closely as possible. I mean, what's the point? Why not leave that to tribute acts?I heard one the other day (or rather 30 seconds of it before switching channels), where Celine Dion was warbling her version of River Deep, Mountain High. I never thought much of the talentless, overrated bint before, but this was more than I could bear. Why just replicate Tina Turner's version with the same backing and arrangement etc? What on earth does it contribute to the musical canon? For a proper alternative, try something like Madonna's version of American Pie. I still prefer Don McClean's original, but at least Madge was opening up the song to a new generation with a new treatment, while demonstrating what a great song it is, however performed.Of course, if RDMH was merely Dion's attempt to reinforce her 'Rock Chick' credentials, then it also failed miserably, indeed entirely predictably so.Sorry, rant over. This self-isolation must be getting to me.
